Neolithic

Please write a first-person essay of 350-500 words in length (350 words minimum!)
as if you are were a Paleolithic or Neolithic man or woman living and working in one of the locations that we discussed in class. To help you with your essay, I have added a list of questions for you to think about and answer (most of this of this information should be included in the text of your essay).

Imagine … you are one of the world’s first artists! For this essay be creative but not silly … it should be based on the material that we covered in class, the content of Chapter 1 in our textbook, and your own thoughts and insights.

This formatting of this essay should be as follows (or points will be deducted from your score):

> 350-500 words in length (350 words minimum!)

> one inch margins on all sides of the page

> 12 point font maximum in an easy to read font like Arial or Times New Roman

> double-spaced text

> include a cover page (refer to the sample I have provided for you at the end of this document)

> make sure to carefully edit your work and convey your ideas clearly and concisely, taking the reader logically from one point to the next.

> proofread your essay before summiting taking care to check for correct format, content, grammar, and spelling.

2) What is your age?

3) Did you live in the Paleolithic or in the Neolithic period?

4) If you lived in the Paleolithic period, were you:

> a sculptor of small objects from Hohlenstein-Stadel, Germany, or

> a cave painter in France who worked in the Chauvet Cave (Vallon-Pont-d’Arc), or at Peche-Merle, or at Lascaux? Or did you live in Spain and work on the paintings at Altamira?
5) If you lived in the Neolithic period, did you help construct and decorate:

> the world’s earliest known sacred structures at Göbekli Tepe, Turkey, or
> the world’s earliest known city at Çatal Höyük, Turkey?

6) What was the date of your work?

7) What tools, implements, and materials did you use to create your works?

> stone, charcoal, ochre (red & yellow), clay, mammoth ivory, plaster, seashell, or bitumen?

8) Where did you find these materials?

9) What techniques did you use?

> incising, chiseling, carving, drawing, painting, spraying?

> was it an additive or subtractive technique?

10) What sort of designs or figures did you make?

11) What did they represent and why did you make them?

12) Did you work alone or with family or friends?

13) Was this kind of work a specialty of yours or did you spend more of your time as a hunter, tool-maker, etc.?

14) Was there a special time of the year that you would do this?

15) If you worked in a cave, how were you able to see to work in the dark parts of the cave?

16) Is there anything else that you would like the reader to know about you, your work, or the time in which you lived?
