Write a five-paragraph essay where you evaluate the accuracy of the following statement:
Contact with European explorers was the best thing to happen to the Native groups of what is today the United States, since Europeans brought the technology, knowledge, and resources that Native groups lacked.
Your response must include:
A thesis statement that directly evaluates the statement (agree/disagree) with a historically-defensible claim
The thesis statement must be in the introductory paragraph
The introductory paragraph must mention but NOT explain the evidence you will use (three different regions out of the seven we discussed in class) to support your thesis
You must use three out of the seven regions we discussed as evidence (not more, not less)
Each of the three body paragraphs (2, 3, 4) must be used to explain how the specific information about each region supports you thesis (e.g., one region per paragraph)
You should focus on different aspects of each region (i.e., don’t repeat the same analysis for all three regions)
You must mention at least one specific Native group for each region that you selected
You must reference (but not quote) the Colin Calloway reading in each body paragraph [at the end of each paragraph write: (Calloway, p. #)]
The book I used was: Colin G. Calloway First Peoples: A Documentary Survey of American Indian History Fourth Edition, Bedford/St. Martin, 2011
DO NOT include direct quotes from the reading (restate, paraphrase, etc.).
Remember: you must provide all the analysis (i.e., how that evidence you are providing supports your thesis)
The last paragraph (5) will restate you thesis and tie any loose ends.
OPTIONAL: In addition, in the last paragraph you could extend your thesis to a modern-day situation, if applicable (this thesis extension is optional)
*Please note that an argumentative essay is NOT a summary of the reading; we already did that in class
You can include some information from our class discussion (including the origin stories) but most of the analysis must come from the reading, i.e., you must reference Calloway in each paragraph
For this particular essay, you are NOT allowed to use outside sources
