Assignment: You will be required to upload a From My Standpoint storytelling personal narrative article. This assignment challenges you to critically think about your social identities from race to gender expression to class to religion to nationality. It challenges you to critically think about your social identities and how they might have hindered or helped you in some contexts. It challenges you to critically think about how you have treated others based on their social identities, and/or how others have treated you based on your social identities. This is a reflective assignment. This is a storytelling assignment. This assignment is not about me; it’s about you.
Assignment Directions:
Write a personal story based on a single question or some of the questions below. Do not simply answer the questions: Use them to guide your personal story. Or, don’t use them at all. Just write a story that has cultural, social, and political significance.
Pick a topic, any topic, and then write a personal narrative article. The topic should be socially appropriate.
Write a 500 to 750 word personal narrative article based on that topic/story.
Develop a catchy title for your article.
Do not write a story that is re-traumatizing for you. Do not write a story that you are uncomfortable sharing with me or the class/public.
You are required to write in first person. For examples:
I remember when I first learned I was white/black/LatinX/Indigenous/Asian/multiracial. I was only 5 years old.
I recall my brothers saying “I throw like a girl.” I didn’t know they had internalized male dominance at the time.
Grading: This assignment is credit or no credit.
Write in complete sentences.
Write in small paragraphs.
