Part 1. Research Project: 5G – Future generation of mobile communication systems.
You are required to complete a brief research work on 5 th generation (5G) of mobile communication
systems. You should conduct an initial research investigation on 5G to identify the area of your focus to
investigate with the aid of references.
As a guide the research work may include the following:
 Overview of what is 5G, motivations and research challenges, and latest developments.
 Critical analysis of a use case and application of 5G.
 A brief literature review of the proposed technologies and forward looking with the aid of
references.
Typically you may use specialist research papers such as the IEEE and other international journals and
conferences. The 3GPP and relevant industry websites are also useful source of technical specifications
and studies.
Part 2: Simulation work: Mobile Fading Channels.
The objective of this part is to investigate the characteristics and performance of mobile communication
channels with the use of MATLAB Simulink. You are required to simulate and analyse with the aid of
multipath fading channel visualization and error performance tools the different type of channels
including flat and frequency selective fading.
Task 1: Characteristics of multipath fading channels: Construct a simple model in Simulink
consisting of a data source, binary PSK (BPSK) modulator, and fading channel block. These functional
blocks are available in Simulink libraries. You may use a random data source from the
“Communications Blockset/Sources”, a BPSK modulator from “Communications Blockset/Modulation”
and the “Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channel” from the “Communications Blockset/Channels” libraries.
You need to enable the “Open Channel Visualization” option available within the Rayleigh fading
channel block to be able to generate and view different plots. Set the data sources and channel block
parameters to specify the channel to be investigated. Run the simulations to obtain visual results. You
can change the settings to investigate different scenarios.
Task 2: Bit Error Performance: Obtain and compare the Bit Error Rate in different fading and
additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. You will need to add the AWGN channel to the above
model (after the fading block), BPSK demodulator, and the “Bit Error Rate Calculation”. You may
disable the visualizer and use the “BER tools” available within MATLAB to plot the results and
comparisons.
The following is required in your report for Task 1 and 2:
 Simulink block diagram and settings of key simulation parameters.
 Results and Analysis: Task 1: Provide plots of impulse response, frequency response, multipath
fading components, and Doppler spectrum for flat and frequency selective channels. Perform some
theoretical calculations to compare with the results obtained. Task 2: Obtain the Bit Error
