All through the history of biomedical research, animals have been used time after time for the research.
Greek physicians like Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) carried out experiments on living animals. In Moorish Spain
during the 12th century, an Arab physician called Ibn Zuhr pioneer animal testing as a method of
experimenting with animals to master surgical procedures before applying the procedures on humans
(Hajar 42). However, during the recent years, the practice has been severely criticized by animal rights
activists (Knight 292). Discussions on the ethics of animal testing have augmented in the recent years,
particularly because of some ethical concerns concerning the morality concerns involved in forcing animals
to go through pain for the benefit of human (Ferdowsian & Beck 1). Still, animal testing plays a crucial role
in contemporary medical and scientific research. This essay takes the perspective that animal testing is
necessary for contemporary biomedical research as it leads to considerable advancements in surgical
procedures and drug invention. Animal testing is a lifeline for human existence, as it helps to save lives and
improve human’s lives. It would be difficult for contemporary medicine to be improved without any attempt
by scientists to study the anatomy of animals in order to understand animal’s inner structures and to apply
the knowledge they gain from the practice to understand how to repair human body organs in the event of
an accident that interferes with their functioning (Rowan 80). This also implies that it would be difficult for
scientists to effectively operate on living human bodies without first experimenting with animals. As
established in a study by Festing and Wilkonson (526–530), animal testing contributes immensely to human
treatment. The researchers surveyed general medical practitioners to establish their views regarding animal
testing. Results showed that 96 percent of participants considered animal testing to be a significant
contributor to advancing human treatment by enabling them to practice surgery and understand how the
human body functions. Animal testing ensures optimal human safety during biomedical research by
enabling scientists to test new surgical procedures. Animal testing also assists researchers in the
development medicines. It assists researchers to test the efficacy of new antibiotics and vaccines, which
may be detrimental to humans. In which case, the vaccines and antibiotics can be first tested on animals
before they can be allowed to go through human trials. Clearly, dependence on animal testing to verify drug
safety is inevitable. By first testing the drugs on humans, they are protected from any likely harmful effects
of the drugs (Franco 238). A recent study of the significance of animal testing by Festing and Wilkonson
(526–530) indicated that a majority of participants were in agreement that without animal testing there
would be no pharmaceutical advancement as the trial of drugs would be discontinued immediately after
