Part A

Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday
Mise-en-scene in the film usually can set the emotional tone of the scene.
The movie Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday‘s light is very adequate almost no shadows exist is bright which creates a simple and cozy atmosphere. While the color tone in Dr. Strangelove is generally gray and often uses shadows to emphasize the critical situation or to express the emotional changes of the characters.
Dr. Strangelove has a scene inside the cabin, the camera keeps zooming in and zooming out on the code machine. On the one hand, it emphasizes the importance of the code to lay the groundwork for a series of chain reactions caused by the failure of the aircraft to receive the return information later, and on the other hand, it expresses people’s unbelievable attitude towards the outbreak of war. At the beginning of the shots of people treating the implementation of the mission has been tired and do not pay too much attention. Then the camera appeared in the flight，an aviator is reading Playboy magazine and another one is playing poker. In the subsequent shots we can also see in the interior of the safe with pictures of women posted on. it shows that most of the crew is relatively lax attitude towards the task.
The film’s disc player is like Mr. Hulot’s character mapping, the original vacation should be relaxed and happy, but most of the people in the hotel are still focused on business and some meaningless social conversation, only Mr. Hulot’s and the children are willing to listen to songs and dance. For some people around him, he is a problem that has to be accepted, and every time Mr.Hulot appears, he is sure to distract others and do something wrong. For example, when Mr. Mr.Hulot looks at his watch, the shopkeeper also looks at his watch, thus mistakenly pouring coffee on the customer. But some of his actions have also won the respect of some people, and at the end of the movie, almost no one wants to have anything to do with Mr. Hulot, but an old woman says that this is the best vacation she has ever had and hopes to see Mr. Yu Luo again next year, while another old man also tells Mr. Yu Luo his address and hopes that Mr. Yu Luo can come and visit.
Composition which is impressive in Dr. Strangelove is the captain reprimanded the adjutant when given a look-up shot of the general’s head in the upper middle of the screen, giving people the feeling of extreme pressure and arbitrariness. Fully expresses the extreme psychology of the General’s admiration for force, but also shows the powerlessness of the adjutant to the status quo, giving the audience a sense of oppression. In Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Mr. Hulot’s relaxed attitude towards vacation is very different compared to other people’s intense, serious, and routine vacations. Thus in the same shot, he is often separated from other people, and few people and children are around Mr.Hulot. This shows that only Yu Luo and the innocent children are really enjoying the relaxation brought by the holiday.

Suspicion
Wings of Desire

Editing keeps the audience focused on the film’s story line and central idea.
In Wings of Desir, due to the special identity of angels cannot experience the suffering of the human world, so in their world are black and white, as simple as innocent children. When the camera transferred to the human being world of earth everything has its own unique color, complex and difficult but is full of life. This editing illustrates the angel Damir’s longing for the colorful world of earth and his boredom with the eternal world of angels in black and white. At the beginning of the film, Damir looks down on earth from a high tower, and the eye-line matching to a child who is looks up high innocently, which reveals that there is a certain commonality between angels and children.
In Suspicion, the camera shifts from the word “MURDER” in Scrabble to a picture of a cliff, and then the camera switches to the heroine’s association of all motives, suggesting that the husband may have murdered his partner. This is followed by the heroine falling from her chair with a scream. This montage sequence is all designed to add suspense and excitement to the film, stimulate the audience to remain skeptical about the hero’s ultimate identity. The hero asks the writer for advice on how to use the poison, and eye contact between the characters in the dialogue cause the heroine to become increasingly panicked and makes the heroine more flustered. But just when the writer says to her husband, “you can’t be a murderer if you try hundred years”, the camera pans to the heroine at this point her expression is one of relief because in her mind she doesn’t want to believe that her husband could be a murderer. But in the immediately following shot, the fade out from a close-up of the husband’s head to the image of the husband locking the door again leaves the heroine’s heart hanging deepening her suspicions about her husband. Then the husband turned off the lights so that the picture became extremely dark plus the act of sending milk to the heroine more so that the heroine suspected to kill her suspicions were confirmed.
Compared to the two masterpieces, Wings of Desir focuses more on the editing technique to do the contrast between the angels and people, while Suspicion uses the editing technique to promote the development of the plot with gorgeous atmosphere.
