A. PAGE 1: Your thesis statement could be thus:
For example: “due to my fascination with the subject of promoting an egalitarian workplace, in terms of gender, I chose to compare two Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark and Sweden, to compare with the United. States.
Initially, I assumed the U.S. was on par with these two countries, but my research and studies demonstrate that these two countries are light years ahead of our country.
From the two articles or books I read on this subject, Malcolm Forbes, “Gender Heaven in Sweden” and “Democratic Danish Duos,” it would seem that these two countries have made great strides in reaching near-perfect gender equality.
Why would the U.S., also a first-world nation and the world’s economic giant, be so far behind?
- You could continue with this suggestion, of stating why you chose your country or countries, all the while staying on page 1:
My family has roots in Sweden, and I did an internship in Stockholm last summer.
It was also there that I started to read Forbes’ book on gender equality.
My aunt, who is transgender, lives in Copenhagen and is a CEO of a major global company that is the most diversified place, in terms of gender, that I have ever experienced.
B) PAGES 2: After your thesis statement, on a separate (second) page, expand on these reasons with your own words and ideas. What do you find compelling, admirable, or disturbing about your choice?
NOTE; WE ARE SWITCHING IN THIS EXAMPLE, FROM SWEDEN TO JAPAN.
-Japanese society has much to admire, especially after my visit there two years ago and after reading and viewing several Japanese documentaries on corporate life.
If one can acquire an excellent job in a Japanese company, you are ‘set for life.”

- Continue to, in your own words, state or reflect on why you think gender inequality is a problem?
- Can this inequality be successfully addressed? Solved?
- Note similarities and differences between Japan and the United States such as:
-numbers of working women
-gender roles for both countries
-existence of an ‘old boy network.’
-obstacles to gender equality:
–in the past
–still in existence
-inclusion of all genders
-LGBTQ issues: how are these communities’ access limited or promoted?
