Meme Analysis
What is this paper? In this paper, you will demonstrate the Kairos (“timeliness”) of a
meme by analyze its rhetorical situation. To accomplish this goal,
your paper will need to include several parts:
 An introduction that captures the reader’s interest and/or
fills in background knowledge the reader might require
 A thesis sentence that states why the meme is “timely”
 A brief summary of the meme that helps the reader “see”
the meme in their mind and identifies the meme’s main
idea and most important supporting details
 2+ body paragraphs that discuss the meme’s rhetorical
situation (author, audience, occasion, and presuppositions)
and are supported with specific details from the meme
 A conclusion that clarifies how the rhetorical situation
shows that the meme is “timely,” and that brings the paper
to a conclusion that the reader will find satisfying
How long should it be? 2.5+ pages in length; 1-inch margins; double-spaced; size-12 font.
Why am I writing it? This paper sets the groundwork for the other papers you will write
this semester. On the one hand, it requires you to learn/review
rhetorical concepts like audience, author, and occasion. On the
other hand, it helps you explore “timeliness”— a consideration that
will help make your future, argumentative papers more effective.
How will I be graded? The writing process activities leading up to the final paper will be
graded for completion (100% if they meet expectations; 0% if they
do not). The final paper will be scored using the rubric below.
What else should I know? Your paper must consist of your original work. If I believe that you

have plagiarized, you will receive 0% for the unit grade.
You are not required to conduct research for this paper. However,
if you do borrow information from sources, you must give them
credit by using in-text citations and a Works Cited page in MLA
format. Put any words/phrases you reprint in quotation marks.
