Project description
While I was there for the talk of Mel Chin, I feel like he is a total artist. He write a song, sing, and make an public art project for the others. What I most liked about his work was the Cabinet of Craving which the front part of it came from the cultural image of China. Cabinet of Craving assembles cross cultural adaptations found in furniture, ancient motifs mix bred with nationalist symbols, all under the influence of addictions that shape historical destinies. ( please paraphrase this.) One thing that I got surprised was the research amount of his work. In his work, I could see that he research before going on a larger scale. Fundraising project for the local people were also amazing. The way he approaches to work requires lots of research, study before the actual project. While I was listening his process and the photos of the fundraising project, I felt like Mel Chin is also the one who communicate with people through the art project. People can join the work by drawing on a printed dollar and this is even for a good reason, and creates positive motion to the local people also.
While looking at his project about the fundraising, I had to think about my own project, Creative capital, which I am also making an public art. What I found important is that research is the key for the large scale of the work in order to communicate with many other people and should find the resonable way for them to join the project also. Not only Mel Chin and Catherine Opie, both of them requires many research and have a specific story behind it ; this enhaces the work of their.
