Here is an example:

The conversation of cannabis has been two sided for many years. On one side people believe everyone should experience the benefits of the plant, and on the other people believe that cannabis should be kept away and forgotten about forever. Nowadays the conversation has started changing in which medical professionals are now becoming interested in the medical advantages to using cannabis for different treatments other than the usual prescription medications. Since cannabis in the medical field is still an up and coming thought we must weigh the arguments for and against use of medical cannabis by using the CNO and CNA codes of ethics.

An argument in support of medical cannabis is the ethical values of promoting justice (CNO,2019) and promoting and respecting informed decision-making (CNA, 2017) are able to provide a strong argument for the safe use of medical cannabis. Many patients’ especial older adults are becoming more interested in the use of cannabis in order to “control their care” (Turner, 2020). The nurses must provide the proper information to the patient then they will be able to make an informed decision on whether or not they will still choose to use cannabis. Once the patient makes a decision, the nurse must accept their decision whether or not they may personally agree which reflects the value of client choice (CNO, 2019).

Contrarily, cannabis is still a very new idea within the medical field all of the effects are still unknown. The CNA ethical value of promoting health and well-being (CNA, 2017), and the CNO ethical value of respect for life (CNO, 2019), both of these values should be considered when arguing against medicinal cannabis. A large part of nursing is the promotion of health and well-being, and while there may be many benefits to cannabis use, cannabis is still relatively new to medical use and does bring forth its own set of side effects and it is unsure of what may arise from long term use. One of the possible side effects is the potential for changes in brain development in adolescence and youths (Turner, 2020). Since medicinal cannabis is still a relatively new concept there needs to be much more research and trials before it becomes common practice.

All in all, medicinal cannabis has many potential benefits, but in the current state of medicine it is unsure if the benefits out weight the risks. In order for cannabis to become common practice, there needs to be patient as well as staff education for the prescriber and nurses to fully understand who should receive a prescription and how to care for patients using cannabis. Education is also important for the patient to receive proper information in order to make an informed decision about their own care. Overall the use of cannabis will be a hot topic for many years but eventually it will become more understood and health care providers can choose whether or not to use it.
