Congratulations, you are one of the newest hires on Amazon’s data science
team. The head of the group has called you and your fellow data scientists
together to give you your first assignment: “Here at Amazon, we depend on ideas
from all our employees, as well as on experimentation. That is why I would like
each of you to design an experiment around some aspect of the Amazon
experience. I would like to know why you are interested in the aspect you
choose, your proposed alternative (i.e., intervention), and how you would go
about conducting the test.”
Requirements
The maximum length is 1,000 words (write the word count at the beginning of the
submission). This includes just the text of the report (not the tables, graphs,
references, or appendices).
The write-up should contain the following elements:
1. Identification of the aspect of the company experience that you would like
to test and an explanation for your interest
2. A description of the current implementation and your proposed alternative
(justify your proposal)
3. A description of the population of interest and the randomisation strategy
you will implement
4. A definition of the overall evaluation criterion (OEC) and justification for
your choice
5. The null and alternative hypotheses
6. State the level of significance and the desired power of your test (provide
a brief definition of each as you define them for your experiment)
7. An outline of the problems you anticipate having while running the
experiment (if any) and how you might avert them
8. What are the implications for the company if the null hypothesis is
rejected? Not rejected?
