Materials Science Project Framework
The need to make products faster, stronger, smaller, lighter and less harmful to the environment
is the driving force for developing new engineered materials and advanced manufacturing
techniques.
Purpose of the project
In this project, students explore 3 three different engineered new materials such as lightweight
titanium, carbon fiber, and/or any material that attracts the students’ attention. Therefore,
students define the material (s), its uses in industry, and how sustainable the material is
Guidelines for Report Preparation
The written report should be organized following these guidelines.
The verbal report should be 15 minutes long and be presented in such a way that each member of
the group participates.
The report and presentation should be uploaded in Slate two days before the presentation as per
class plan.

Sustainability (pollution, disposal, recycling, remanufacturing (use of resources such as energy
and water), toxicity, etc.)
Report Format
1. The report must be typed, double-spaced using Times New Roman 12.
2. Report covers are a choice of the group.
3. The report must have a title page
4. The report must have an executive summary
5. A table of contents page is necessary.
6. The report must have bibliography.
7. The report should consist of at least 5 pages (not including executive summary, cover,
content, appendixes, and bibliography), double spaced typed information. Illustrations,
pictures, tables, etc. should be added to the report to emphasize the principles.
8. Use subheadings within the report when appropriate following APA style.

9. Sources of information should be indicated throughout the document (APA style),
including quotes, the sources of information should be from recognized databases, peer
reviewed papers, books and very few from internet
10. Plan the report carefully to develop an organized and non-redundant report. It should be
organized and assembled as a continuous report and should not appear to be several
independent segments bound together.
Tentative Outline of the Report
1. Executive Summary (ES): The executive summary should summarize the material
properties, uses, fabrication and sustainability. The ES by itself, must provide enough
information about the project so that the reader can judge simply by reading this portion if he or
she wants to read further.
2. Table of contents: Including appendixes and figures
3. Introduction: This first segment should present the purpose of your research and a brief
history of the materials. Be brief and succinct, but make sure that the reader can obtain a
perspective of the materials. Finally, include at the end of the introduction a paragraph
summarizing the next sections of the report (Follow the format how books are introduced)
4. Materials properties: In this section, discuss the different, physical, chemical and
mechanical properties of each material. I strongly recommend introducing each section of the
report indicating what is in it. I also recommend closing each section with a summary of
important points and introduce the following section. Both must be very succinct, it just gives
flow to the paper
5. Industry application/uses. Describe in what are the main uses/ applications of the
materials. Illustrate with case examples.
6. Fabrication methods. Explain the manufacturing processes when applicable
7. Exhibits, tables, and figures. All calculations, figures, and other graphical or numerical
information should be summarized in this section. Additionally, any appendix, exhibit, table,
and/or figure attached to the report must be typed and referred to in the report.
8. Conclusions: a closing paragraph of what you learned
9. References: Must follow APA style
10. Attachments ( Pictures taken from the Machine and Inspection sites, Graphs etc )
