This book is dedicated to my mother. I was raised by a fierce woman warrior. Your courage, wanderlust, rebel spirit and sharp intellect molded me. Thank you for everything you have been for me and Ernesto — a friend, a mother, a grandmother, a comrade, and a confidante. Thank you for introducing me to Bobby Sands, Assata Shakur, George Jackson and so many other ideas when my mind and heart were still in their initial stages of ferment. You set me on a path from which I have never wavered nor retreated, despite whatever mistakes I have made. Even in your most trying moments, I will always remember you, dancing carefree on the world’s stage, smiling and pumping your fist as the Irish folk music of Tommy Sands, Black 47 and Mary Black roared away in the background.  And I will always remember you reading deep into the night, entranced by words, lost in time, until a book collapsed onto your chest.
