Application Paper (15%):
Purpose: The primary objective is to apply organizational behavior theory to analyze a real-life
situation and to propose a course of action from a decision-maker’s point of view. Your paper
MUST NOT exceed 10 pages, (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-font, 1-inch margins) not
including references and appendices. The emphasis should be on quality not on quantity. There
should be a cover page with your name and the name of the company you’ve researched. There
must also be a separate page for references. Citations must be in APA format.
You may be asked during the course of the semester to explain your paper to others in the class
when we cover that topic in the syllabus. See the Course Schedule for the deadlines for submitting
a copy of your article with a short paragraph explaining the issue, an outline of your paper and the
final document. All documents should be submitted in hard copy and electronically to
Barbara.Durkin@oneonta.edu by the due dates specified in the Course Schedule.
Structure of the Paper:
Section I – Analysis of a Problem
Management-related problems exist in many kinds of organizations, no matter what their product or
service. For example, accounting firms, record companies and not-for profit agencies have all
experienced difficulties managing their organizations.
You will be acting as a consultant to a Fortune 100 company publicly-traded in the United States.
Select an article from a source such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fortune or
other periodical concerning a problem that will have an impact on the employees in that company.
To benefit you the most, you should choose an article related to your major that you would find
interesting to analyze. Gather additional information about the company and the topic from sources
including those available in the library and online, using recent references in current periodicals to
enhance your understanding of the issues. Without more data on your issue, you will be forced to
write in generalities and will not be able to adequately complete Section III of this paper. Your
writing should focus on problem identification and evidence supporting your interpretation of the
Section II – Application of Organizational Behavior Theories
Use the theories and concepts in organizational behavior for guidance in solving these problems. In
this section, you should discuss in detail at least one theory related to organizational culture or
change management. You must incorporate in your paper and reference section articles written by
the appropriate theorist published in peer-reviewed academic journals. These articles may be found
using the various library databases including Business Source Complete. The footnotes section in
your text will provide a starting point for your research. References to the textbook and tertiary
resources such as Wikipedia and MindTools are not acceptable.
Section III – Suggested Solutions
Using the decision-making model, outline the steps that the key decision-maker(s) should take and
justify your recommendations. Your plan of action must be derived from the theories you have
discussed in Section II. In some cases, you must develop a solution that integrates more than one
theory. Your plan of action must be specific and include enough detail that the decision-maker(s)
could begin implementation. Submit your paper on the due date noted on the Course Schedule. Be
sure to properly cite all resources/references using APA format. Remember if you weren’t born
with that idea (whether paraphrased or quoted), it must be cited.
