Artists for Humanity is a Boston-based organization that has created a successful model of how a nonprofit organization can be very entrepreneurial in its business approach. Established in 1991, Artists for Humanity was started by Susan Rogerson as an after-school arts program for middle- and high school students to encourage youth empowerment through art and entrepreneurship. Through the mission “to provide underserved city youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts,” Rogerson wanted to show that young people could provide tangible services to the commercial world. Artists for Humanity employs and trains students to build self-esteem and to give them life-long skills. Students receive materials, studio space, and instruction from professionals and artists, and in turn they have to treat the program like any other job: They have to show up on time, treat the work seriously, and function as team members. They also have to fulfill the needs of their customers by listening and responding to their requests. Their instructors not only teach them to become better artists in a variety of mediums but also to become entrepreneurs. Students learn the principles of marketing and selling by working with clients on commissioned work and by exhibiting their art in galleries. Artists for Humanity has quickly expanded throughout the years, creating not only after-school programs but summer programs as well. As the enterprise has grown, the funding needs have extended beyond the capacity of regular fundraising, and other means of revenue have been incorporated into the organization. For example, the organization has established a membership in which the proceeds help support the organization, and the member receives exclusive benefits and opportunities. In addition to donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations (with limited government support) the students sell their work and services. Both the organization and the artist benefit by each receiving half of the proceeds. Several years ago, Artists for Humanity recognized the need to bridge urban community businesses and neighborhoods and as a result constructed a facility, the EpiCenter, to house its programs and gallery. As one of the country’s most environmentally sustainable commercial buildings, it attracts many, and as a result, Artists for Humanity is able to rent out its gallery space for exhibits, events, and receptions. The gallery rental program exceeded first year projections in just seven months, and the facility had more than 100 bookings in the first year for corporate and nonprofit events, both contributing to additional income. Another benefit of the rental space is that it brings in a captive audience to view the students’ work, leading to opportunities to create more work and more program income. Furthermore, the students are now selling their art online at the organization’s Web site. Even with declining funding from the government, Artists for Humanity has shown that it can generate revenue and maintain a sustainable social enterprise through fundraising, selling memberships, selling artwork and services, and providing rental space for exhibits and events.

1. Outline the Capabilities-Resource Model for Artists for Humanity by answering the following questions: What capabilities do they need? Who provides them? How will they meet the capabilities? Where will the resources come from?

2. What are some other ways in which Artists for Humanity could generate income not involving fee-earning endeavors? Be specific.
