See “Exemplar Title Page” in Lab Report folder on course website for an example of a running head. Writing Your Introduction 1. Word Limits At least 650 words No more than 1200 words 2. Resources & Reference Material: Lecture slides (Body Fluid Homeostasis) Reviews and primary research articles. The following is a list of the articles that you presented on as a group as well as some review articles. Review articles are a good place to start to give an overview of the field. You may also find several articles cited in the review that are of interest to you and are relevant to your research: Reviews: Leib et al. (2016), Weisinger et al. (2009), Verbalis (2003), Ch’ng and Lawrence (2019) Presentations: Nation et al. (2016), Javie and Palmiter (2017), Lazartigues et al. (2008), Rowland et al (2004), Lee et al, (2019), -You should reference at least 5 of the papers and reviews listed above. -You should reference at least 2 additional research articles (relevant to the topic) of your own choosing from the “Literature Review” list compiled from the class. -Your total number of references for this assignment should not exceed 10 (that means you need to cite at least 7 references and not more than 10). -References should be in APA format. http://www.bibme.org/apa and/or see the Exemplar for how to format references.   Important Components of Your Introduction • General introduction to the concept of homeostasis. • Why is body fluid homeostasis, specifically, important? • Do we face any regular challenges to body fluid homeostasis? • What are some potential consequences of a failure to maintain homeostasis? • Is the inability to maintain body fluid homeostasis a common problem? • (I’ve provided a couple of review articles in the list above that discuss disorders of body water and solute homeostasis.) • Briefly explain the importance of solutes (and sodium specifically) in maintaining body fluid homeostasis. • Give some background about how the brain senses changes in body fluid osmolarity and the mechanisms that generate thirst and salt appetite. (You aren’t writing a textbook chapter. This should only be a paragraph or so. Focus on things that will help introduce your own study to the reader.) • Current study Now that you’ve outlined why studying regulation of body fluid homeostasis is important (above), give the reader a brief summary of your own study. • What was your hypothesis? • In 1-2 sentences, to conclude your Introduction, provide “spoilers” about your results and a summary of their significance to this field of research.
