Literature review
This week, you will start working on your course project by selecting a specific health policy initiative or issue and begin a comprehensive review of the literature:
Project Task: Construct an overview.
Construct an overview to introduce the identified health policy initiative or issue and focus on local, state or federal populations
The overview should include the following:
Objective for paper’s purpose
Overview of specific health policy or issue
A detailed description of the legislators or agencies that are involved in the specific health policy and how it has been funded or allocated to improve health care practices and outcomes
A detailed description on how the health policy will influence and affect the targeted population
Provide rationale for why this specific health policy topic is important and needed
Contrary to the directions in the course site, you are NOT REQUIRED to receive approval from me prior to completing this week’s assignment. However, if you like, you may post assignment related questions on the Questions for Professor page. Also, This paper is NOT to be 15 to 20 pages as stated in the instructions. The paper this week MUST be be 8 to 10 pages maximum, plus title page and references and any appendices. The final paper, which is an improved version of this paper, will be longer.
Create Evidence Table with 4 to 6 scientific or medical publications. Evidence Table must be submitted with the paper in addition to the required number of pages. You may utilize Law Review articles. You may utilize court cases. The APA Manual has instructions regarding citing court cases and law review articles.
State the purpose of the paper
Identify the problem/issue and the scope and nature of the problem.
Introduce the public health policy that relates to the problem identified and that that you will be analyzing. Is it a federal policy or a state statute?
Discuss why the policy is important or necessary
Explain how the policy relates to the problem
Consider the population affected and pertinent background information.
Include the existing data that led to the creation of the policy.
Analyze the data that generated enactment of the policy
Analyze the policy:
Consider how the policy came to public and political awareness.
Discuss the level of government and the stakeholders involved.
Ethics
Is the policy or statute ethical? Can it place liability on the provider? (for example, in some states providers have a duty to disclose to contacts of an HIV patient that they have been in close contact with a person who is HIV positive. The rationale: The provider has a duty to warn others who might be at future serious risk of becoming HIV infected. On the other hand, is the information being shared needlessly to the public? Which duty is higher: the duty to the patient or the duty to warn? )
