Journal Entry #2-Encountering Dramatic Literature

As we read Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Water by the Spoonful, our next journal entry will focus on your encounter with the script for Hudes’ award winning, moving and thought provoking play. This journal entry will focus on the ways that characters, and the relationships between characters, are created through the use of language (both dialogue and stage directions). As we move into not simply viewing theatrical performance, but exploring the play scripts upon which these performances are based, attention to what characters says, and sometimes don’t say can be incredibly revealing about their personalities and the story/plot through which they act and move. Attention to detail is therefore of the essence in this journal entry, as the more specific and incisive you can be in your observation and analysis, the deeper your understanding of the play and process through which that play moves from page to stage.
Please select one or two scenes from the play to analyze, and address the following questions in relation to your chosen scene(s):
1. What type of language does each character use in the scene?
a. Is it poetic? Everyday? Staccato? Long-winded?
2. Are there differences in how each character speaks?
3. What does this language potentially reveal about the character?
4. What does this language reveal about the relationship of the characters in your chosen scene(s)?
As with Journal Entry #1, you may also document any challenges you had in understanding the script, characters or context in which the plays was written and produced. Your entry should be at least a page and a half (TOTAL), double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
