IPE activity

IPE is interprofessional learning. different people from different majors communicate and share their knowledge based on their profession. As third year dental students, we were in the exposure phase where we were given a particular case and each would put their input. It was held online with people from: biomedical, nutrition, pharmacy, general medicine and dentistry majors. The facilitator displayed the case and asked certain questions and each would try to solve based on how their major would help in treating the diabetic patient. For example: biomedical students said that they would do the blood testing, nutritionist would give dietary modifications and so on..

An interesting thing happened where everyone in the meeting was underestimating my role as a dentist however i added a huge contribution which made everyone think twice about my role as a dentist. A student asked: “but what would a dentist do?” not knowing Diabetic patients experience a lot of oral manifestations including “periodontitis”. I also added that: “sometimes a physician wont know that the patient is diabetic however if i as a dentist have a look at the oral mucosa and i suspect inflamed gums or xerostomia (dry mouth), i would take into consideration a lot of systemic diseases including diabetes which is the grading modifier for periodontal diseases. In addition that a lo of studies confirmed the significant association between diabetes and periodontal diseases and this goes bidirectionally. I was so impressed and confident that no one has more or less job in the medical field .. we all contribute in bringing satiety to the patient. Regardless of the major, we all have equal jobs and rights.

Someone from the medical students actually asked me about the name of the disease because he wanted to search about it which was periodontitis.

One more thing, conflict happened between a medical student and a nutritionist where the medical student disagreed with her opinion about the action she would do when treating a diabetic patient. I personally found it rude because he was invalidating her thought.

At the end i really benefited from the session where i got to know the role of each medical profession in more details and i connected the dots..

Most importantly when writing please follow the rubric and answer the questions within the essay (i will attach whats expected)
