The works to be done is an Internship Report.
The subject is : “Creating a website for an association”
I want you to write on the following parts :
Introduction (2 pages)
Analysis and Design (13 pages)
Development, Implementation, Testing (13 pages)
Results (10 pages)
Conclusion (2 pages)
For all the additional information (UML, coding, screenshots…), will be added by myself and will not be needed from you.
A thesis text usually contains the following parts:
The choice of chapters can be adapted if there is some well-defined reason for a split (e.g.
a very detailed problem analysis is required, such that Chapter 2 is better split into two individual parts “Analysis” and “Design”, since a single chapter would otherwise become exceptionally long).
Introduction
The introduction specifies the problem or task of the thesis as well as the result that the
thesis aims at. The host organization and the organizational unit where the internship was
done are described shortly in this chapter. The chapter also explains the context of the
project inside the partner organization’s infrastructure (what shall the project result be
used for?, why is it of interest for the organization?).
Introductions seldom need more than 2 to 3 pages and should be comprehensible to readers with minimal IT background who are not experts on the topic of the thesis.
Analysis and Design
This chapter might start with existing approaches and other scientific contributions that are
used or considered to be useful to solve the task. It should contain introductions into fields
of science/engineering that are necessary to understand the student’s approach. This is
not always easy, as you have to decide on what you do expect as commonly known and
what needs to be introduced.
If a thesis includes the development of some software or hardware, this chapter has to
contain the analysis and the design of the planned software. Describe the approach (algorithms, techniques, etc) used to solve the given task and why you chose exactly that approach. If you make use of certain existing concepts or techniques, this chapter gives the
opportunity to show how these concepts are used. The chapter should cover the following
topics (if applicable):
class diagram, sequence diagram).
Implementation
This chapter presents the main facts about your implementation. These facts include used
tools or frameworks, the development environment, and some code snippets which show “vital parts” of the problem solution. Make a selection of the “most interesting” information;
any additional information can be put in the appendix. The complete source of a developed
software should never appear in this chapter; it is delivered as source code on a
USB stick or a DVD attached to the printed report. If there has been an explicit test phase,
then the test setup and the achieved results should be included. Finally, some information
about the usage of the software should also be included (complete information on developed
APIs should be put in an appendix).
If the thesis is a research task where a question is treated by empirical means (e.g. measurements,
simulation), the implementation chapter describes the technique that was
used. It must be stated why a certain technique was chosen and why it is preferable to
any other. You should make clear, what aims you are aiming at and what kind of results
you are expecting. Especially the method of interpreting the outcomes of your research
(i.e. the measured values or those yielded by a simulation) should be presented.
Results
The results chapter presents the main results achieved during the internship. Results can
be shown in the form of screen shots of the developed software, but might also included
run time analyses, memory usage analyses etc., or a combination of these results. For
screen shots, a selection must be done to only present “the most interesting” parts of the
product; if needed, additional screen shots can be given in an appendix available on the
attached storing device.
Conclusion
The conclusion chapter summarizes the results of your work. As a part of that, you have to
clarify if this result (or a developed system) meets the requirements as stated in the intro –
duction. If your results include some finding, the conclusion chapter can compare these
with the results of other scientists/engineers on the same topic. The whole text should be
concluded with an outlook on how the work could be continued (ideas for further developments
or a better technique, unsolved problems).
In addition, if you like, you can also shortly describe the personal experiences you made
during the internship and the lessons you learned for your future professional career.
STYLE GUIDE
Fonts and Line Spacing
The recommended font for a thesis is “Times New Roman”. A font size of 12pt should be
used for normal text, with a line spacing between 115 – 150% (preferred 130%).
