1. Review the "Strong Interest Inventory Profile and Interpretive
Report," linked in the Resources, for this discussion. Describe
how you would present the assessment results for Jane
Sample. Be certain to provide a description of what the
inventory measures, including what it can and cannot
determine. Assume you have met Jane in your role as an
addiction professional and she is in early recovery.
2. Read the responses from fellow learners and respond to at
least two of them. What reactions do you have to the ideas
presented? Include examples from the course readings,
scholarly literature, and practical experiences to support your
perspective, and raise questions to continue the discussion.
PEER 1- Because employment provides fulfillment of a variety of client basic
needs; survival, relatedness, and self-determination, “enhancing employment of
those with SUDs may be associated with long-term recovery”. (Sahker, Ali, &
Arndt, p. 1) The term “recovery capital” is used to describe client personal,
physical, and social resources that can aid in recovery. Employment is one
example of “recovery capital” that provides improved self-determination,
fundamental needs, and life-satisfaction.” (Sahker, Ali, & Arndt, p. 2)
Because employment is such an important component to long- term recovery of
SUD, a tool like the Stong Interest Inventory Profile and Interpretive Report
( Strong) can be implemented to help the client begin to make “satisfying
decisions about their career and education”. (Grutter & Hammer, p.2)
The Strong provides results in six unique sections, that combine to provide a
roadmap to potential career opportunities that are associated with
the clients personal traits.
First, General Occupational Themes (GOTs) are determined that describe
the clients interests, skills, and values in six broad areas; realistic (R),
investigative (I), artistic (A), social (S), enterprising (E), and conventional (C).
(Grutter & Hammer, p. 2) Basic Interest Scales (BIS) then provide specific
interest areas within the six GOTs that are likely to be motivating and rewarding
for the client. (Grutter & Hammer, p. 2). Occupational scales compare the clients
likes and dislikes against people working in various occupations to demonstrate
likely compatibility of interests. Personal Style Scales (PSS) provide individual
preferences in areas related to work style, learning, leadership, risk taking, and
teamwork that provide additional insight for the client as to what vocational
environments are likely to fit. (Grutter & Hammer, p. 2) The Profile Summary then
provides a quick “graphic snapshot” of all the areas of the Strong including a list
of the top ten careers that are likely to be most appealing for the client. It is, of
course, important to mention the client that the information gathered from
the Strong determines a clients interest, not abilities or skills, and that it will be
important for the client to research each career in greater detail before
committing to pursue a particular education. This process can be implemented
into the treatment plan of the client as they continue to work towards their
vocational goals and sobriety.
