identification of an unknown bacterial species from a simulated specimen of the intestinal tract

Paper details:
A lab report is required. This should be 5-6 pages in a standard
scientific format. The report will focus on identification of an unknown bacterial species from a
simulated specimen of the intestinal tract. Students have the option to work individually or in a
team of two who will turn in a single report. When a team is involved the contribution of each
author must be clearly stated. Reports submitted after the deadline will not be graded. The name
(s) of the author(s) must be placed on the front page along with the lab section, semester and
name of the instructor. The report should include figures and or tables. Each figure/table should
have a caption (short text or explanation, placed below the figure/table). Reports must be
properly referenced as per standard scientific format.
Format of the report:
Abstract
This is a brief descriiption of the work. It should include results and significant conclusions, and
materials and methods should be only briefly mentioned. This is generally written last but placed
at the beginning of your report to give the reader a brief synopsis of your work.
Introduction
A brief descriiption of the microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract and bacterial species associated
with gastrointestinal infection/disease. You should provide specific examples and discuss the
purpose of your work with the API strips.
Materials and Methods
This section should include the Gram stain of the isolate to be identified, the oxidase test, the
API 20E strip used in the experiment, and the reagents added after incubation of the strip. A
figure or table of the strip should be included that shows the biochemical tests. You should also
add how you achieved the identification code (not the actual identification code) since the
“unknown organism” is identified using a numerical code from the bioMerieux catalog/APIweb
that lists each reference species with its own 7-digit code.
Results/Discussion
This part of the report should include the results obtained from the Gram stain, oxidase test,
analysis of the API strip after incubation and addition of the reagents, the numerical code
assigned after reading the results, and identification made using the catalog of bioMerieux/Api
web. You may want to add a short descriiption of the species/strain you identified. Is it a
pathogenic species/strain, an opportunistic pathogen or a commensal species? Provide at least
one example of infection/disease if associated with it.
Conclusions
Outline the advantage of using the API 20E strips in a clinical microbial laboratory, including the
possibility to readily submit a report of the identified pathogen or suspected pathogen. Keep in
mind that a more comprehensive analysis requires the addition of an antimicrobial susceptibility
test. Different strains may exhibit different patterns and knowledge about them helps physicians
select the appropriate drug.
