IB PHILOSOPHY /AN

You will be writing my IB Philosophy internal assessment. The theme I already chose is the study of aesthetics.
“Aesthetics is an area of philosophy that focuses on the nature of art, on the relations between art and
society, and on concepts such as beauty and taste. It allows students to explore philosophical questions
such as the following:
– What is art?
– What is an artist?
– Are we all born artists?
– Do all works of art arise from the same artistic impulse?
– Can we identify works of art outside what a given society calls art?
– Should art have any religious, moral or political message?
– How do we define what is beautiful and what is ugly?
– Why should we be concerned with works of art when they might not seem to have utility?”
if you still have doubts about the theme please google “ib philosophy internal assessment guide”

This is what I have so far:
– I already started writing part of it:
My philosophical problem is
– aesthetics
my philosophical object is an artwork of Picasso (info attached below and image attached too)
description of my object (if you see the rubric, you see that this must go in the IA)

– The object is a work of art made by Pablo Picasso in 1939. In this work, it can be assumed that it is a woman (from the title of the painting), but obviously it is not symmetrical, nor perfect, nor does it have “qualities” of a beautiful woman. It has a pig-like air, due to the pink skin tone as well as the triangular shape of the nose. The eyes do not resemble each other and they are definitely not symmetrical. The mouth appears one-eyed and is in the corner instead of in the middle. I chose this painting as it connects with the philosophical problem of “aesthetic judgment” in several ways. For me, personally, it is not a painting that makes me beautiful or extraordinary and I do not understand why Picasso’s works of art are considered “art.”

Central or optional topic to which the philosophical problem belongs:
Aesthetic judgment

Optional topic number according to the Philosophy Guide: 19

Statement of the problem in the form of a question.
How do we define what is beautiful and what is ugly?

General explanation of the philosophical problem:
Aesthetic philosophy is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of beauty and the perception of it by individuals, which is why it is closely related to art. It is the aesthetic philosophical philosophers who help to solve the question of why “aesthetic” art causes a reaction in humans. This study is enormous and contradicts itself a lot since some philosophers, like Aristotle, say that there are rules for something to be considered beautiful, but others say that beauty is subjective and that there is no “wrong” or “right” in beauty. if not it depends on the person who is admiring the art. Aesthetics is something very complex as well as very interesting.

Justification of the connection between description of the object and the philosophical problem:
I used Picasso’s work as a philosophical object as it connects with the question of whether art is subjective or not. Pablo Picasso was a very recognized artist, his works of art have been exhibited in various museums around the world, but his art does not match the definition of the beautiful. The people he painted were not symmetrical, and they did not cause a “positive” reaction at first sight, but since someone mentions that it is by Picasso, this “positive” aesthetic experience is already created. This shows that not only is art subjective, but the reaction that art causes in humans is also due to the feelings that a work of art emits. Not everything is aesthetics, if not sometimes it is the feelings that art can emit (either for the meaning or for what it conveys).
