Human Resource Management and the Workplace

You have recently taken the post of HR Manager in a medium sized organisation
that is growing, and have identified the need to ‘revise’ your selection processes.
Your organisation has always relied on the ‘classic trio’ as its selection process, and
this is not working. Turnover of employees is high, especially during the first 14
weeks of employment, and line managers have reported that new employees just
don’t have the right skills or attitudes to fit into their teams. You have researched a
number of techniques which can be used to supplement the classic trio, and now
need to explain your findings to the Board of Directors. You need to write a report,
which should include the following:
• A critique of the problems associated with the ‘classic trio’ selection process.
• Discussion of the range of alternative selection processes available.
• Recommendations to what your company can do to improve the selection process,
to maximise effectiveness and reduce turnover.
Task specific guidance:
1. Your report must have practical implications but should rely on academic
literature to support your arguments. A list of all references should be
provided at the end of your report.
2. The report should consider the following;
• Introduction
§ Provide an overview of the scope of the report.
§ This is a medium sized organisation, but you should base your report on the
type of organisation from your degree discipline (e.g: logistics, supply chain,
tourism, transport). This should be indicated in your introduction.
• Present a critique of the current practice of using the ‘classic trio’ within
the organisation.
§ Evaluate this type of selection process (application form, interview and
references) and outline the problems it poses to the organisation. This
should include potential ethical and legislative problems.

• Provide a discussion of the different types of selection process that are
available to the organisation. You need to think about methods that are
suitable for a medium sized company.
• Make recommendations based on your findings and provide suitable
indications of cost and resource implications for what you suggest.

professional bodies such as the CIPD and CMI
