1. The assignment is 2500 words (+10%) – this means you can write up to 2750. More than this will be penalised
2. The word count doesn’t include a cover sheet/title or contents page, reference list or appendices
3. The question is
“For an organisation of your choice, undertake a review of the key external factors affecting it and on the basis of this review,
a) Critically evaluate the approaches to HRM strategy in relation to the organisational strategy
b) Analyse how HRM practitioners respond to national and/or international factors at both an operational and strategic level
4. Ideally you should use the same organisation you discussed in Assignment 1. This means that you don’t need to spend time researching a different company and can focus your reading on the other parts of the question. You should identify what its strategy is– using a model or theoretical approach (e.g. Porter, Mintzberg etc)
5. You can use any model to review the key external factors. We have used STEEPLE as the main approach in the lectures – if you want to use this approach then I would suggest doing a full STEEPLE as an appendix and focus on the 3 or 4 key HRM related issues in the main report. Remember to explain why you have chosen those 3 or 4 factors – what makes them the most important?
6. When you are asked to critically evaluate, this means you need to discuss theory and research. You might for example want to look at the three strategic approaches to HRM we looked at in Lecture 4 and consider which is most relevant to your chosen organisation, given the external issues you have identified.
7. Part b) of the question asks you to consider some of the practical consequences of your conclusions. These don’t necessarily have to be in the form of recommendations but there should be some discussion of how your theoretical conclusion translates into action.
8. Your supporting reading should focus on good quality academic sources (including the core text). Don’t just rely on newspaper articles, consultancy reports or CIPD practitioner briefings (these can be useful supporting sources but not the basis for an assignment).
9. In particular, please avoid sites like Wikipedia, Investopedia, or other generic business sites. You should also avoid essay bank sites like MBASkool, UKEssays etc. None of these are reliable sources of academic information.
10. Make sure you use Harvard referencing.
