Total____/50
Instructions:
1) In this essay you will research and present an argument in essay
format which not only identifies an existing problem currently
affecting the world, but also proposes/argues for a solution to the
current problem.
2) The problem can be anything as long as it is currently affecting
people/the planet. This means that you cannot discuss a historical
event/issues.
Examples can be things like:
 local issues that affect people in the community
(Homelessness, lack of affordable housing, education
problems, lack of resources in the city i.e.. Parks, rec
centers, etc.)
 Problems that affect entire states or countries
(College/higher education problems, laws that should be
passed/repealed/reformed).
 Social issues that affect people on an individual level (how
people should be treated, how people should
act/live/behave/etc.).
3) Once you have selected a topic, write a paper where you first
discuss your chosen current problem in detail, and second argue,
through research, why a specific solution should be
implemented/enacted to resolve the problem.
For example, if a student wants to write about the current problem
of a lack of affordable higher education options in the U.S., they
must first discuss how the high cost of college/university negatively
affects people currently. Next, the student must argue/ propose a
solution that could be implemented to resolve the issue of high cost
colleges/universities. They could argue for a free college option
(similar to what former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders
proposed). They could also potentially advocate for expanding
funding for student aid/grands. The student gets to advocate for the
solution that they believe is the best course of action to resolve and
issue that is affecting the world right now.
Outline:
1) Introduce the topic to the reader (1 paragraph)
i. Provide a topic sentence telling the reader the current event
problem you selected.
ii. Provide a thesis where you assert that the issue/problem can
be resolved or lessoned if people adopt the solution you
selected in your research on the issue.
iii. End the paragraph by previewing for the reader what the essay
will discuss in the upcoming paragraphs.
2) Discuss the current problem you selected in detail (1-2 paragraphs)
i. What events caused the problem to originate?
ii. What is occurring right now regarding the topic?
iii. Who is involved?
iv. How are people affected directly by the problem?
v. How big is the problem?
3) Plan: Give one cohesive solution or “plan” that could solve the “harms”
(problems) you have identified in the previous paragraph (1
paragraph)
In this paragraph, you must answer the following questions.
i. What actions will be conducted to fix the problems?
ii. Agents of action: Who will initiate and conducted the plan?
iii. Funding: How much will the plan cost and where will the
money come from?
iv. Enforcement: How will you guarantee your plan will continue
over the years?
*Note: your solution can be something that you personally believe will fix
your current issue. In other words, it can be something that no one else is
calling for in society/culture.
*Note: You can also research and present other people’s plans. For example,
if people are proposing that a specific law should be passed or repealed as a
good solution to fix your selected current problem affecting the world, feel
free to advocate for the passing/repealing of that law as your solution.
4) Solvency: Discuss how your solution will resolve and/or fix the current
problem that is negatively affecting people you outlined in paragraph 2.
(1-2 paragraphs)
i. How will your plan potentially solve the problems?
ii. How will people’s lives be improved through your plan?
5) Conclusion (1 paragraph)
i. Review the harms
ii. Remind the reader the plan you proposed
iii. Review the benefits of your plan
(Paper should be roughly 5-7 full paragraphs long
