Use the source essay noted in the prompt as evidence. Do not use any other
sources. Do not use Internet sources.
2. Write in the present tense when discussing a text. So, write your essay in the
present tense.
3. Write an introduction that introduces the author and the title of his or her essay.
Provide background information regarding the source essay. The introduction should
funnel to the thesis.
4. Remember that an essay title should be punctuated with quotation marks. Both of
these sources are considered essays.
5. Create a focused thesis based on the assignment. The thesis should be assertive.
Place thesis as the last sentence of the introduction for clear organization.
6. Create topic sentences that reflect thesis content and organization and that have an
assertion. Create topic sentences that also serve as umbrellas for their paragraphs.
Place a topic sentence as the first sentence of a paragraph to help organize points.
7. Boldface thesis and topic sentences. (I want to see what you consider as your
thesis and topic sentences.)
8. Develop paragraphs with examples from the source essay. (Examples must be cited
according to MLA standards. See examples provided in The Norton Field Guide and
MLA materials provided in class.) In your essay, cite the source three different ways:
quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. See class readings/resources for MLA
examples. Essays with incorrect or missing documentation may earn a failing
grade.
9. Include an author’s full name on first mention. In the body of the essay, use the
author’s last name, no polite titles such as Mr., Ms., or others. In the conclusion,
include an author’s full name as a reminder to the reader. Do not refer to a writer by
his or her first name.
10. Do not use the following pronouns to present information: first-person (I, me, my,
mine; we, us, our, ours) and second-person (you, your, yours).
11. Focus on the author and his or her experience. Show that you understand the
author’s writing. This essay is NOT a personal essay.
12. Proofread your paper. Read each sentence looking for errors. Read your paper from
the last sentence to the first sentence, looking for errors. Do not rely on your
computer’s spelling and grammar checker. Essays with serious and/or numerous
grammatical errors may earn a failing grade.
13. Present your paper in MLA manuscript format; see MLA examples in The Norton
Field Guide and MLA materials provided in class. Missing or incorrect MLA
manuscript format may result in 15 fewer points.
14. Create a conclusion that refers back to the thesis. The conclusion should sum up the
meaning of the essay and be memorable to the reader. Don’t use the phrase “in
conclusion.” Encourage the reader to keep reading until the last word.
