How COVID-19 highlights the differences between health services and health policies in the US and Canada
Thesis: a clearly defined proposition – something you intend to demonstrate or prove in your paper. (In
developing your thesis think about it in terms of providing an answer to a research question. For example,
“Are private clinics violating the Canada Health Act?” or “Are international trade agreements a barrier to
expanding our public health care programs.” A good question will provide a clear focus for your research.
Good organization: a clear, logical structure. This should include an introduction that identifies your thesis
and explains clearly the purpose and focus of your research, a lengthy central section that lays out your
research findings and a concluding section that summarizes the evidence and the resulting conclusion that
you have reached in your essay. (It is often helpful to have a table of contents that provides an outline of the
paper’s structure)
Knowledge of recent research on the topic you have selected (normally by including a suitable bibliography
and referencing the various authors in the bibliography in the text of your essay.)
Effective use of the evidence you identify in your research on the issue addressed in your paper
Writing style: good, clear writing, with careful editing and attention to normal scholarly standards.
