For this assessment, you must demonstrate your understanding of artistic interpretation by completing one of two options:

OPTION 1: PAINTING

1. Choose one of the paintings below. Carefully study the paintings and take notes.

Ask yourself the following questions as you study the paintings:

⦁ What scene is the painting about?
⦁ What characters are in the painting?
⦁ How are they dressed?
⦁ What are the expressions on their faces?
⦁ How do they interact with each other?
⦁ What is the main focus of the painting?
⦁ Where does your eye go first?
⦁ How does the painter use space?
⦁ What is in the foreground?
⦁ What is in the background?
⦁ What colors does the artist use?
⦁ Are there any interesting or unusual details in the painting?
⦁ What might the artist’s interpretation of the characters or scene be?

2. Now, watch the film version that depicts the scene from your chosen painting.

3. In a short essay of three paragraphs, explain how the painting and film version portrayed the same scene differently. What details did the painter add in or leave out? What details did the film add in or leave out? Use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure throughout your work. Submit your paper to your instructor.

OPTION 2: MUSIC

1. Review the following scenes from Romeo and Juliet:

⦁ The opening fight scene between the Capulets and Montagues
⦁ The Capulet party where Romeo and Juliet meet
⦁ The balcony scene
⦁ Romeo and Juliet’s wedding

2. For each scene, select a song to represent the tone and story. These can be modern songs or older songs.

3. Submit the title and lyrics for each song, along with a three-paragraph explanation for how the songs reflect your interpretation of the play. Use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure throughout your work.
