Do’s and Don’ts for History 106 paper
*Go back over the topic and make sure you have done what it asks. Here is the topic again:
Drawing upon lectures, class discussions, and your text books from this course, write a four to five-
page paper summarizing what you have learned in this class. In your paper, you must, first, discuss the
ways in which African Americans survived slavery and contributed to the economic and social
development of the South and America, beginning with African and the African Slave trade. Second,
discuss how African Americans survived the institution of slavery and Africanized the American South.
Finally, discuss how they helped free themselves from slavery by 1865 and founded institutions such
as Black colleges, churches, banks, insurance companies, fraternities and sororities to uplift their race.

* To make sure your paper is focused and not all over the place. If I were you, I would choose 3 ways
African Americans survived slavery and helped Africanized the South and provide evidence backing it
up from your sources. Make sure they flow together so that you can easily transition from one theme
to the next. Remember, this is not a chapter by chapter analysis.
*Have a clear thesis statement in your introduction. I should know exactly what factors led to their
survival you will discuss in the body of your paper before I actually get to the meat of the content in
the body paragraphs. Think of the thesis as a roadmap.
*Proofread before submitting. Once you submit it in the final submission section that I’m grading it and
I will not let you resubmit it if you discover mistakes after the fact. If grammar is not your strong point, I
suggest making a free grammarly.com account.
*Paper should be 4-5 Full pages. If you go over a little bit that’s fine. It should be double spaced. The 4-
5 full pages does not include the works cited (not a bibliography). The Works Cited should be reverse
indented and in order alphabetically by the author’s last name. Remember in a works cited page, you
are citing the book as a whole, not specific page numbers like you do in the actual paper.
*MLA Citations (Unless you are a History major, then you use Chicago Style): You need to make sure
you cite correctly (and frequently) and spell the author’s name correctly (The author of your textbook is
Darlene Clark Hine (not Hines). A correct example of a citation looks like this (Hine, 374)/(Hine, 3.4).
Remember, when in doubt, cite. You don’t want to undercite your evidence. You don’t have to cite
every sentence but I should not see 1 or 2 citations on a single page. It needs to be more than that. If
you have no citations in your paper, you will get an automatic F. Your works cited at the end should line
up with your citations in the paper. When doing a works cited page, you are citing the book as a whole.
You list page numbers or section numbers throughout your paper. Also keep in mind you must use
your textbook. You may also use other resources we used for class (i.e. films: African Americans:
Many Rivers to Cross episodes or the Eyes on the Prize documentary, other extra credit films), (Make
sure you cite films correctly, use the Purdue Owl Website for guidance). You can also use the Civilities

and Civil Rights book. No Outside Sources can be used. Don’t forget the author’s last name in the
main textbook is Hine, not Hines
*DO NOT USE SUBHEADINGS
*Try to avoid using contractions and first-person perspective.
Remember, this paper is more than just about the content, I am also grading structure and the Achilles
heel for some, grammar and formatting. Make sure your paper is well organized and flows together.
In knowing this, make sure you proofread before submitting your paper. Also, MAKE SURE YOU BREAK
UP YOUR PARAGRAPHS THAT ARE TOO LONG. Paragraphs should not be a page long. You can break
them up and still maintain the same idea. When you get ready to move on to another idea, just add a
transition word that will get you to the next idea. Don’t wait until the end of the paragraph to cite. Cite
throughout your papers.
*Lastly, do not procrastinate! You have had all semester to do this paper. Papers are due Wednesday
November, 23 2020 by 11:59 PM in course materials in the tab I provided for final paper submission.
