Historical analysis of workplace discrimination in America
Workplace discrimination has been an issue in America since the early days of colonization. Over the years, workplace discrimination has taken many forms including gender, race and ethnic discrimination. In some cases, it has gone as far as to include hiring practices that were based on a person’s ancestry or religion. As various laws have been enacted over the course of history, there have been numerous attempts to address workplace discrimination and ensure that everyone is given fair treatment regardless of their background.
In 1863 during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, Congress passed The Equal Pay Act which prohibited employers from discriminating against any individual based on their sex when it came to wages for equal work performance. Although this law was rarely enforced and had limited success due its lack of enforcement power; however it did set important precedent regarding civil rights in America (especially concerning women). This act helped pave the way for future acts like Title VII of Civil Rights Act 1964 which outlawed employment-related discrimination due to race color religion sex or national origin within public services throughout US states – making sure all individuals are treated equally despite differences such as these previously mentioned factors.
The Anti Discrimination Act 1971 further expanded upon anti-discrimination legislation by prohibiting people from being discriminated against due to physical disability sexual orientation or age while working at places such as restaurants bars hotels etc., adding protection for those who may not be able find jobs easily because they are too old too disabled or just don’t fit into typical societal categories (like heterosexual couples). The Americans With Disabilities Act 1990 also added additional protections for people with disabilities by requiring employers provide reasonable accommodations if necessary so individuals could still perform duties required without putting undue stress onto themselves/others around them – thus creating more inclusive workplaces every step along way!
Since then we’ve seen multiple amendments made over time both strengthening existing regulations while introducing new ones like Genetic Information Nondiscrimination 2008 which protects genetic information used in decisions made about hiring firing promotion training etcetera; One example would be preventing companies using genetics determine who gets hired versus fired rather than allowing those decisions simply rest upon job performance alone! Overall workplace discrimination was historically rampant but thankfully today much progress come about ensuring everyone can expect same opportunities when seeking out employment regardless their backgrounds having said that though more work needs continue being done order effectively eliminate discriminatory practices altogether from American labor force especially now times where diversity inclusion are becoming increasingly valued assets modern day workforce environment .
