Thank you for shedding light on the very real barriers to full scope APN practice in your state and beyond. These barriers include physician supervision, payer policies, and admitting privileges to name only a few. Let’s talk more about APN regulation; specifically, the educational requirements for becoming an APN. Do you recommend regulation of the required skills and knowledge for entry practice as an advanced practice nurse? Why or why not? Please explain your rationale.

According to the Federal Law, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) is “a nurse practitioner who undertakes services to which the individual has the legal authority to perform, in their respective states, by state laws and meet requirements such as education and experience. These requirements are prescribed by the Secretary in regulations.” The Florida Board of Nursing is a body that conducts regulations to qualify individuals into practicing nursing in the State of Florida. The body regulates qualifications in vital areas including disciplines, licenses, monitors, educators, and rehabilitation. The body ensures that nurses perform to the minimal standard safety and competency care provided to all patients in health care. Failure by the nurses to maintain the minimum practice standard leads to forfeit of licenses and prohibition by the state to practice nursing. The Florida Legislature enacted the Nurse Practice Act that provides a framework for the provision of safety, professional nursing care and protection to populations in need of such care. Practical and professional nurses should have their prelicensure educational program from educational institutions, in the state of Florida approved under s. 464.019 (Toney-Butler & Martin, 2019). Advanced or specialized nurses perform advanced levels of nursing approved by the board after they have undergone post basic specialized experience, training, and education. Nurse Practitioners in Florida perform specific actions such as nursing diagnosis and treatment, medical diagnosis, medical treatment, prescription and operate within the guideline of a protocol of supervision that is well established by authorities. During my practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Tallahassee, Florida, the Emergency Room (ER) has shorter wait times with wait times provided to the community. Urgent care centers are readily available within walking distances of the hospitals. Compared to physicians, NP charge lower costs and are still able to provide satisfactory quality care
