The final assessment in this course is a position paper on a controversial topic related to the global
food system. In order to help provide guidance and get you started for the position paper you will
submit a proposal first. The topic does not need to be one covered in class, but should be something
with two or more sides to the argument which you will write about.
Your assignment will contain 5 main parts:
1. Title (1 point): something to engage the reader, not just “Position paper proposal”
2. Why is this topic relevant? (5 points): Provide some background on your topic. Why is it important?
What impacts does it have?
3. What is your objective/thesis? What side of the argument will you be on? (2 points): clearly state
what you’ll be looking at and which side you’ll be arguing for in your paper.
4. Why did you pick this topic? Why does it interest you personally? (5 points): Is it something that
you have a keen interest in? Does it impact you directly?
5. List of 5 possible references (2 points): these can be references you have cited in your proposal,
but do not need to be. Please choose references which are not required reading for the course.
Your proposal will be about 2 pages in length (1.5 or 2x spaced), and use APA referencing

good guide!) It is to be written in full sentences/paragraphs, please no point form.
