As a future nurse, it is important for me to acknowledge and understand different ways to be prepared to respond and help in a possible disaster. The current patient population I care for in this term are pregnant women, which are a special and specific patient population to care for. I also help many geriatric patients in medical surgical units, although I experienced a wide range of different patient populations in the emergency department. Caring for pregnant women means ensuring that both the mother and fetus are safe. This means removing the patient from the dangerous situation and then assessing the patient for any injuries. Monitoring the mother and fetus during this time is crucial to ensure there aren’t any pathophysiological issues going on, such as infection or fetal distress.

Challenges that may occur in a disaster are providing essential care and resources for different patients, assessing who takes priority with limited resources and time, and having readily available staff who are experienced and confident in disaster training.

It is important to gain more hands-on training to supplement my academic study of disaster management to feel more prepared. With the tragic frequency of disasters around the world, nurses must be well trained a sthey ar often on the frontline in disaster management. This means having hands-on skills to help patients in disasters.

Having extra training to increase my preparedness for disaster management would be beneficial to patients in danger. Everyone becoming certified in Basic Life Support and CPR would help benefit the safety of the public. Courses on disaster management and disaster recovery can also improve my skills on how to maintain confidence in being prepared to help in a disaster.

Culture of disaster preparedness can be changed and promoted through educational opportunities and raising awareness. Academic institutions can conduct research and develop programmes for healthcare workers to build resources that could be utilized (Achora, S., 2016). Education, training, resources, support from coworkers, disaster manuals on different units, communication with the team, having food stocked, extra supplies, and emergency kits are all simple ways to be well equipped for an emergency.
