Appendix A – Census Profile Steps
1) Go to: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/dp-pd/prof/index.cfm?Lang=E
2) Search your CMA name:
3) Get search results. In this example, I searched “Kelowna”. You will likely get multiple results; select the
ones for the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)

4) Your results should look like this. If you selected the wrong thing, or you want to change the data you have
displayed, you can click on “Change Geography” to identify another location.
5) To download the data, click this button:

6) Select “Option 1: Download data as displayed in data table” and then select “CSV.” CSV stands for Comma
Separated Values, data file type that is readable by many different software programs, such as Excel.
7) Select “OK” and the file will open in Ecxel (if you have this enabled on your computer). If not, save the file
and use another software program to open it.

8) Voila! Census data for Kelowna CMA in Excel. Now I can easily create bar graphs, pie charts, or line graphs.
There are 2250 lines of data, so pick carefully what you want to include.
9) Here is an example of the Visible Minority Population data for the Kelowna CMA.

4) With the data selected, go to the “Insert” tab and select one of the chart types:

5) Use the “Chart Design” options to make your chart how you want:
6) To insert in your Word doc, right click on the chart you have created and select “Copy”
7) In Word, select “Paste.” The look and/or colours may change, so be prepared to change your paste options.

Compile a short list of relevant terms. This should include your chosen CMA, your chosen group to focus on, and a
few geographic terms (see Appendix C and/or Ch. 8).
1) Go to Library.ok.ubc.ca.
In this example I will use “Vancouver + Chinese + Segregation”
2) Hit search
3) My initial results include 7,125 potential sources, but many of these are not what I am looking for. Chose
filters, like “Scholarly & Peer-reviewed” and “Journal Article.” Others you may consider include “Full text
online” and specifying the publication date.

4) By only selecting the first two, I have already reduced my results to 265 (and the first one is a geography
paper!)
5) Choose a few promising papers, read them, and write your report. Don’t forget to cite!
