For this assignment the paper you choose must be a research article therefore it should have abstract, introduction, methods and materials and results/discussion sections. You also want to have current information so your article should be no more than 10 years old.
Searching for journals at South Central College can be done through the library webpage at www.southcentral.edu/library. From the library main page, under Research Guides select “Biology” from the drop down menu. Select a database from the “Search Databases for Articles” section of the Research Guide (lower left hand side of the webpage). The databases can be used to select scholarly/peer reviewed journals for limiting your search results. Databases can be searched from any campus computer. The Databases can be accessed off-campus using your StarID and password. Please consult the library regarding any problems accessing content.
Citation of your sources
Since the information you are writing about is not your own information, you must reference the source of your information. Since you are using only one source, I will allow you to cite the paper used at the bottom of the page (using the AMA citation style). If you happen to use more than one source, you will need to use AMA in text citation as well. If you quote directly from the source, you MUST use quotation marks or you have plagiarized and will earn 0 points. How to Write a News Article:
Pure news articles are the most structured type of newspaper article. A specific format must be followed in writing this type of article. The purpose of this article is to convey facts of an event to an interested reader.
1. As with all newspaper articles, it should be set off with a headline. The headline shouldn’t be a summarization of the article; instead it should serve the purpose of getting the reader’s attention.
2. The story should start with a “lead paragraph” which is the summary of the story. Do not tease at the beginning or summarize at the end as you sometimes see on television news. Lay all your cards out on the table. The lead paragraph should include the Who, What, When, Where, and Why or How of the story.
3. After the lead paragraph comes explanation and amplification, which deals with illuminating details. Use discretion in choosing details to include. Also, some details may not be as important as others. Put in order of importance from greatest to least. Don’t feel the need to include everything you know, but do include everything you feel is important.
4. If the average reader will be confused reading the story, fill in the gaps with background information. When in doubt, give that information.
5. Do not use the first person.
6. NO BIAS. Personal prejudices should not find their way into the article. Again, the use of an op-ed
or column forum is recommended for personal opinions.
