COMM 100: Public Speaking Formal Speech of Introduction
This assignment requires you to research, outline and present a formal speech of introduction on a famous,
real person (dead or alive). A formal speech of introduction should make the audience want to listen to the
speaker and bolster the credibility of the speaker. When preparing and presenting the speech, assume that
you are actually introducing this person to your class as a guest speaker. The speech must be 5-7 minutes
long, and must be presented with an outline.
Speech Requirements and Grading Criteria:
1. Introduction 15 points
a. Present an opening device that stimulates attention and focuses on the topic
b. Present a clearly worded thesis statement
c. Preview each of the main points of the speech and use signposting
2. Organization and Development of the Body 20 points
a. Select and develop 2 or 3 main points using one common organizational pattern
b. Select and integrate subpoints and supporting materials for each main point that are appropriate
for the topic, audience and the assignment
c. Subordinate subpoints and supporting materials properly under each main point
d. Use of transitions (transitional statements, internal previews and internal summaries)
3. Integration of Supporting Materials (Note: Mark items on margin of outline) 39 points
a. Biographical information, including, but not limited to such information as date and place of
birth, parents, education, marriage, children, career profile, etc. (7 points)
b. One extended narrative (story) about a significant event in the person’s life (7 points)
c. Significant accomplishments or landmark achievements of the person (7 points)
d. Two quotations by or about the person (3 points each; 6 points total)
e. Four credible and complete source citations from four different sources (3 points each; 12 points
total). Provide complete citations while delivering the speech. At least three of the sources must
be from published sources (i.e., books, newspapers, periodicals or journals).
4. Conclusion 10 points
a. Present a summary of the main points
b. Present an appropriate closing device
5. Language or Word Choice 10 points
a. Use of simplicity (clear and precise language)
b. Use of vividness (colorful and descriptive language)
c. Use of appropriateness (non-offensive language, avoidance of slang, proper grammar, etc.)
6. Delivery 15 points
a. Vocal quality (pleasantness, sincerity and smoothness of the voice)
b. Intelligibility (effective use of rate, loudness level, articulation, pronunciation)
c. Variety (effective use of variation in the voice)
d. Avoidance of vocalized pauses (“ahs,” “ers,” etc.)
e. Frequent eye contact
f. Control of posture
g. Avoidance of fidget behaviors
7. Outline (Note: Follow the model distributed in class) 16 points
a. Formatted correctly following the model
b. Proper subordination of the outline
