Foreign Policy Memo

Write your assignment in the form of a memo (here are some templates (Links to an external site.) (for memos you can use)  that you will send to the President.
This is a formal assignment, and must include complete paragraphs containing complete sentences. Papers submitted lacking clearly visible paragraphs will be returned unread.
Papers must be submitted in a Word document file on the Assignments tool.I do not accept work via email. If I cannot open the file you submit, I will return your submission with a zero (0) grade until I receive a file that I can open.
The length requirement is 1000 – 1500 words or four to six pages.
Using Sources: Your memo must make references to all of the sources you use for information. Make your references by using phrases such as “According to…” and “As stated by _____ in _____.” Then be sure to include in-text citations in the body of your memo. In-text citations are a required element of this assignment.

In your memo, you are to research the recent history of United States in international conflicts from 1947 – 2014. Then you are to make a policy recommendation, in which you advise the President on the future direction the US should take regarding involvement in international conflicts.

Your analysis and recommendation is to be written in the form of a memo, addressed to the President of the United States. Your memo should be 1000 – 1500 words (four to five pages, double-spaced), not including the Bibliography. Follow the formatting requirements that are provided following these instructions.

The following are requirements for the content of your memo to the President.

Here is how to write your memo:

Part 1: Historical Analysis

Review: Review our textbook and summarize the history of one conflict in which the United States was involved from 1947 – 2014 (choose from the Korean War, the Vietnam War, or the wars in Iraq), which you think hold the most significant lessons for the President of the United States and for Congress. Your summary is required to include answers to the questions below.

Your summary should address these questions for the conflict you have chosen. Each response to these questions should be at least two full paragraphs (three to five sentences). Copy and paste each of the questions before your responses in your memo.

Who were the actors (countries and or militia group) involved?
Why did the United States become involved in the conflict?
What was the outcome?
Invitation to use additional sources: You may research and use additional credible sources for your memo. Topics that may be researched include an historic conflict you choose for Part One and a current international challenge the US faces now, such as North Korea, the Middle East or Russia. Additional sources must be retrieved by using the NMSU-A Townsend Library research databases (Links to an external site.). “Googled” sources from the internet are not acceptable. If you use additional sources, your memo must still utilize our textbook as a source for your memo. All sources must be cited appropriately.

Part Two: Analyze and apply the facts – Make your recommendation to the President of the United States on future US foreign policy toward international conflicts.

Take into consideration in your recommendation, the lessons that U.S. policymakers can learn from United States’ involvement in wars throughout its history.

This part of your assignment should be a minimum of three (3) full paragraphs total.

The recommendation section of your memo is required to address the following questions. Copy and paste each of the questions before your responses in your memo:

Should the United States become involved in further military action in international conflicts?
Explain the reasons for your answer. You must make at least one reference to the conflict you discussed in Part One. What should the President learn from this history?
Your final thoughts and advice to the President.

Your paper must provide citations for each source used.
Papers may be formatted using either MLA (Modern Language Association) or Chicago/Turabian Style (the formatting used specifically in history).
Your paper must include a bibliography page, regardless of the style chosen.
All papers must include citations within the text of the paper, in the format chosen (Chicago or MLA), corresponding to each source in the bibliography.
Papers submitted without appropriate citation of sources will be considered plagiarized. See the policy on plagiarism in the course syllabus for more information.

Clarity of expression: Since this is a college-level course, I expect all students to turn in college-level written work. Grammatical and spelling errors can result in a deduction of up to 10 points from the grade earned on the paper. Papers that are replete with errors or that are incomprehensible will be returned unread. Don’t let this happen to you!

Paper Appearance Requirements:
In general, follow the formatting instructions that correspond to the citation style you have chosen for your paper (MLA or Chicago/Turabian). At a minimum, papers must include the following:

• Papers must include the student’s name and date submitted.

• Papers must contain page numbers and the student’s name on each page.

• Papers must be written in 12 point font, non-cursive text.
