Unit cohesion is a mainstay of the military unit and should also be a part of the healthcare team. To ensure a group will come together leaders should develop team building events, 1,2 have open communication,3 and practice intrusive leadership.3
There are various types of teams a healthcare leader may have to organize and lead. Work teams, parallel teams, special project teams, management teams and in today’s age virtual teams.1 Each type of team must be organized appropriately with the right mix of personnel to accomplish the task. If the teams are not developed appropriately this can lead to poor team cohesion due to time it may take to learn skills to bolster deficiencies.2 Once the team is appropriately staffed the leader can develop team building events to show strengths and weaknesses of the team. Currently on a weekly basis this author has a different team building event every week. Some of the events are medical drills, some are physical activities while others are mental challenges. Changing the team event each week shows the team who excels in areas and where others need help.
Open communication is a key component to team coesion.1 With effective communication the leader can let the team know the direction to take.1 With a clear direction and standards the team will not falter by trying to establish their own goals, roles or norms.1 A great tool to ensure that the team knows it’s purpose is a mission or vision statement. This allows the team to focus.
Finally cohesion can be maintained with intrusive leadership. 3 Leaders deal with people. As leaders one must ask the questions of members what they are doing and how they are doing.3 The surface level platitudes do not cover this role. With intrusive leadership the leader can see where friction points are within the team and focus on aiding corrective actions.
Poor unit cohesion can be a destructive force within a team. However, with team building events, open communication and intrusive leadership with clear goals and focus teams will excel.
