This film festival’s theme on how Black people have sought a place in the world
through assimilation into foreign communities and pursuing social change is a
strong motivation for people dealing with hardship in contemporary society to
keep fighting. Assessing history creates an opportunity to understand how far
society has come and the important lessons established by the people that
came before.
Learning from the Past: A Sankofa Film Thematic
This film festival is inspired by the Sankofa film and video collective and will feature the following films
from the collection:
A Family Called Abrew (1992)
This documentary explores the history of Africans who lived in Europe before the great migrations of the 1950s and 1960s. In the process, it explores the history of the Abrew family,
which has been living in Scotland since the 19th century. It explores the history of a growing
Black community that has survived in an isolating and hostile land through endurance and
solidarity.
Perfect Image (1988)
This film examines the struggles of Black women as they sought a
place in a society that continually stereotypes them. They seek
to establish a positive image that reflects who they are.
Dreaming Rivers (1988)
This allegorical work explores the experiences of Caribbean immigrants in Britain. As
Miss T’s children gather at her wake, they reminisce about the loss of their mother. The
imagery in this scene reflects the loss of identity that follows these immigrants.
Home Away from Home (1994)
This film explores the struggles of African immigrant women. It portrays the isolation they feel in their new homes. Miriam builds a mud hut that is a nice way
to reminisce about her home despite being unwelcome by her neighbors.
The Passion of Remembrance (1986)
This film uses allegorical monologues and footage from documentaries to showcase
different issues affecting Black youth in the UK during the Thatcher era. It shows
how multilayered and diverse these experiences were, laying the foundation for understanding the struggles this population endured.
