Oral Presentation: Frequently asked questions
What topics are acceptable?
Your presentation should focus on an aspect of the research that you propose to carry out for your dissertation (Note: If you have had to change your plans, you may base your presentation on your new plans for your dissertation).
In your presentation, you could focus on ONE of the following:
The rationale for and background (i.e. literature review) to your study
Your research questions and the design of your study
A theoretical, methodological or ethical issue raised by your study
Your preliminary findings (i.e. results of piloting)

How long should my presentation be?
10 minutes. This is a strict limit. Tutors will stop marking at 10 minutes. Please also note that if your presentation is considerably shorter than 10 minutes, it is unlikely that you will have met the assessment criteria.
What format should my presentation be?
You should make a recording of yourself talking over your slides. There are two recommended ways in which you can do this: 1) using the Record Slide Show option in PowerPoint, or 2) by using the free online screen casting software Screencast-O-Matic. Instructions are provided on the VLE site in the Presentation Guidelines section. You can use other software to record your presentation, but please note, only the following formats can be accepted: AVI, MP4, MPG, WMV, MOV, QT, ASF, 3GP, WMA, MP3, M4V. You do not have to appear in the video yourself, but this is an option if you use Screencast-O-Matic.
Who will be in the audience?
Your presentation will be marked by one of your tutors. You should, however, imagine that your audience comprises MA students as well as your tutors from across the Department.
