Causes of Mental Health Issues
Determinism-a belief that all events are the result of things that happened before them and that people have no real ability to control what happens to them
Bio genetic determinism-functional mental illnesses often run in families. In 1800s Kraepelin identified a dementia praecox, an early deteriorating condition of the brain, now known as schizophrenia-this opened up the discussion of the neurological or biochemical bases or mental health problems.
Psychological determinism-there are psychological antecedents of mental disorder- looks at the attachment issues and the trauma and stressors one experienced in childhood
Social determinism-individuals have a susceptibility to the disorder and that social factors precipitate it and maintain it
-Social interactions and social constructs (meaning developed in coordination with others that are maintained and re-affirmed together)
-looks at the attachment and the childhood stressors but also the contemporary contextual factors, think ecologically
Bio-psychosocial determinism-the eclectic approach to viewing it, mental health factors are caused by multiple factors
