This project involves the examination of a culture. Culture and its changing forces are explained in chapter two in your textbook. You will look at a group of people’s material and nonmaterial culture (values, norms, language, gestures, food, clothing, housing, traditions, laws, transportation, climate, etc.) to better understand a different group of people’s way of life.
• You will create a photo-essay to learn about a group of people’s way of life. A photo- essay has written work as well as illustrations.
• In chapter 9 of the textbook on pages 252-253 and choose one of the Least Industrialized Nations to research (must choose one of these to receive credit). Examples are as follows: Philippines, El Salvador, Peru, Jamaica, Kenya, Honduras, Nicaragua, Columbia, Madagascar, Bolivia, Nepal, Congo, Lebanon, Ukraine, Egypt, Afghanistan, Thailand, Jordan, Sudan, Morocco, and Guatemala.
• Students will provide parenthetical references (in-text citations) to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
General Instructions:
• This paper will be written in a Microsoft Word document (saved as PDF works also). You will cite your work in the body and develop the Work Cited page using the MLA format. The paper should be laid out just like the sections the instructor has provided. This is not an English paper.
• Turn the project in on or before the due date to receive credit.
• For this paper you will have written work and illustrations (provide photos) of the people and their culture. The sections that require illustrations state to provide the illustrations. Pictures should be in the body of the paper illustrating the written work. For example, as you describe the clothing, show pictures of the clothing.
• All written work must be double spaced, typed in 12 fonts, Times New Roman; length will be a minimum of 17 pages.
• Do not use Wikipedia. You will not receive credit for information from Wikipedia.
• SafeAssign will be used for this project. Work must show 30% or less for plagiarism to receive credit. You will have two (2) attempts to submit your work. If the plagiarism percentage is high (31% or higher) make corrections and resubmit your work by the deadline.
• Proofread your work. Divide the paper into the provided sections.
• Do not procrastinate. Time is short.
• Follow the grading rubric provided.
Requirements
Section 1 – Create a title page. The title page will have the first and last names’ of the group members, name of culture researched, and an illustration representing the culture.
Section 2 – Demographic information – Include the following information: population size, racial breakdown, religion, language spoken, climate, type of currency, type of government and main source of income (how do they make their living), include other important information found in research. You may bullet this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 3 – Rules to Follow – What rules should not be broken when greeting members of the community, touring or driving? How should you behave in their part of the world (communication and manners) – (Dining manners go in the food section.)? What laws do you need to be aware of so that you are not arrested? This section should be written in paragraph form in complete sentences. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 4 – Money – How much money would someone need if they were in the area? For example, how much does food, lodging, gas (if applicable) and clothing cost? Show the cost in U.S. dollars as well. Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 5 – Transportation – What will you use for transportation during your stay? What is the breakdown of the cost of transportation (if transportation is available)? Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.

Section 6 – Clothing – What clothing would you need to wear for the day-to-day activities? Also, include specific clothing styles worn for special celebrations? Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 7 – Food – What types of foods will you eat? How often will you eat? What foods are eaten on special occasions? Also, what types of dining manners would you need to know so that you do not offend anyone? Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 8 How They Live -Provide information about their traditions/customs, celebrations, rites of passages, daily life, superstitions, etc. Also, what does their daily life look like? If someone were to visit, what would they experience? Include in this section information about their belief system, family life, gender roles, etc. In other words, showcase how they live. This section should be written in paragraph form in complete sentences. Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 9 – Territory Map – Provide a map and describe the landscape. Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects
Section 10 – Current Event – What does life look like today in the media? Is there a major event taking place? What is it? Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 11 – Challenges the group faces. Explain any challenges the group of people face today. This section is not the same as number 10. Illustrate this section. Students will provide parenthetical references to the sources of their material and will cite their sources on a Work Cited page at the end of their projects.
Section 12 – A Works Cited page completed in proper MLA style will be provided as a guide to all material referenced within the researched portions of the project. You will use a minimum of six sources.
