Define critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Discuss what critical thinking in nursing practice entails and explain why it is important. Discuss the role of critical thinking and evidence-based practice as they relate to patient outcomes.

Critical thinking is the nurse’s ability to examine objective and subjective data, determine a problem or an issue, and then through the nurse’s experience, intuition and creativity, develop a plan of care, either independently or by collaborating with others involved (AACN, 2008, p.v.).
Evidence based practice, is using the latest scientific research and the evaluation of outcomes, along with patient’s preference to establish a quality plan of care (Dynamics in Nursing, glossary).
It is important to understand that to improve patient care, nurses must always be advancing and improving education. Looking and searching for a better way. Nurses using evidence-based practice and critical thinking are changing the way we care for our patients. They are reducing infections, time in the hospital and constantly improving the quality of care received by patients.
There have been many changes to nursing with evidence-based practice. One example that I would like to share is how we care for newborns. When I first became a nurse and worked in the mother baby unit, the babies would get transferred to us right after birth for assessment, bath, medications, etc. Thanks to evidence-base practice and critical thinking nurses, the care began to change. Now, we promote skin to skin for the first hour after birth. The studies have shown babies transition much faster, they are calm, have less respiratory distress, less temperature and glucose instabilities and best of all, less admission to the NICU (Moore E. R., Anderson G. C., Bergman N., Dowswell T. (2012). Critical thinking and evidence-based practice definitely play a vital role in providing quality care.

When I went to school for my Associates Degree in Nursing we talked about critical thinking. How important it was to not just memorize lab values, and side effects of medications, but apply this knowledge. In nursing school, we simply defined it as thinking about your thinking, and then expanded from there. According to the Nurse Journal, “The Value of Critical Thinking in Nursing,” critical thinking is more of a skill set that is developed over time (Nurse Journal). The Nurse Journal, goes further and explains specific attributes, skills, and the pitfalls of critical thinkers (Nurse Journal).
Evidence-based practice according to, “Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses,” Evidence-based practice is the use of the most current and best evidence to guide the care of patients. (AMSN). Evidence-based practice is important in caring for our patients and ensuring that the care they receive is up to date. Critical thinking skills allow us as nurses to use evidence-based practice to ensure our patients get the care they deserve, with the best possible outcome. I work at a walk-in clinic, many times emergent patients walk through our doors, and we have too decided the best course of action to give them the best outcome. Our staff must know and use critical thinking skills along with evidence-based practice in deciding if a patient is right in our setting or if they need higher level of care.
