WRITING YOUR ASSESSMENT:
 This assessment must be completed individually.
 You must use Harvard referencing system (Law students may use OSCOLA)
 Your work must indicate the number of words you have used. Written
assignments must not exceed more than 10% over the specified maximum
number of words. When a written assignment is marked, the excessive use of
words beyond the word limit is reflected in the academic judgement of the
piece of work which results in a lower mark being awarded for the piece of
work.
 Write your student ID number at the top of every page.
 The assessment comprises more than one task; both tasks must be submitted
in a single document.
 You must number all pages.

SUBMITTING YOUR ASSESSMENT
In order to achieve full marks, you must submit your work before the deadline. Any
late work must adhere to ARU late policy.
Requests for short-term extensions will only be considered in the case of illness or
other cause considered valid by Student Support. Please contact
academic@arucollege.com A request must normally be received and agreed by the
Support Adviser in writing at least 24 hours prior to the deadline.

ASSESSMENT TASK:

PART ONE
This assessment has two parts:
PART ONE: Argument Map (three tiers)
PART TWO: Essay (700-1000 words)

You MUST complete both parts and submit them in accordance with the dates
published on Moodle.
You should also bring your map to class in Week 8 for Formative Feedback.
Students have benefitted in the past from this activity and it is a good opportunity to
check you are on the right track for success.
Part One

Argument Map
For this part of the assessment you are required to:
 Choose an essay question to write on
 Undertake research and decide what you wish to argue i.e. what is your thesis
statement
 Develop your argument – identify reasons that explain your thesis statement
and provide evidence to prove this reasoning.
 Use critical thinking to identify credible sources to back up your argument and
display THREE different and reputable sources within your map
Requirements / Instructions
Choose from one of the essay questions below (Listed under Task Two Instructions).
You may find the articles identified useful as part of your research process, but you
will need to find more than the resources given.
Then:
 Using your so called ‘thesis statement’ map the areas you will explore in your
essay.
 Follow one of the methods for mapping used in class or as instructed by your
lecturer. There are also resources to assist you, which are available on
Moodle.
 Your map will demonstrate the basis of a logical and reasoned argument,
backed up by credible sources.
 You must display a minimum of three reputable sources, (your final essay will
have a minimum of six) however there is no maximum limit. Use critical
thinking to decipher whether the sources you are using are credible or not.
