Introduction

Wind power systems are engineering technologies used for the generation of electricity from wind resources. Example of these technologies are onshore and offshore wind turbines. Wind turbines are some of the commercially developed renewable technologies and contribute to reduction in carbon emissions. As part of your Engineering Practice 2 module, you are required to write a literature review based on the given specifications:

Learning Outcomes to be assessed

LO3 Research a topic, find relevant literature and produce a critical review.

To meet this learning outcome, it is expected that the literature review is constructed and completed to a standard commensurate with the academic level. The areas of spelling, grammar, punctuation will be reviewed by the marker along with the ability of the student to construct a meaningful discussion/argument on the selected subject area.

With regard to references, an appropriate referencing system must be employed and be consistently applied throughout. It is expected that a minimum of 10 appropriate quality sources are sited from journals, text books, e – books along with appropriate media and webpages. In summary you are expected to source a diverse range of material.

The coursework requires you to complete a literature review report on the following:-

The UK is a global leader in the generation of renewable energy. Wind power systems are used to generate electricity from renewable resources (wind) located on land (onshore) and in the ocean (offshore) environments to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Wind power system started from onshore (land-based) systems, and it is now moving to deep-water offshore locations in order to achieve the global target of net zero carbon emission by 2050. Wind power technology is the most matured of these technologies of the emerging renewable energy technologies. You are required to complete a literature review appropriately referenced that reviews the “Challenges and opportunities facing the development of offshore wind power systems (fixed and floating wind turbines)”.

  • This section is a very brief introduction to the concept of offshore wind power systems (Offshore wind turbines) ( Approximate 350 words)
• Fixed and Floating Wind Turbines Technology.
  • Review of wind power technologies (2010 – present), challenges faced by Fixed and floating wind turbines, current state of fixed and floating

wind turbines and challenges faced by fixed and floating wind turbines; opportunities and future trends in fixed and floating wind turbines development.   Your review must be supported by relevant data (including figures and tables) from peer-reviewed journal sources. You should ensure you use the latest data and sources in your literature review. (Approximate 1500 words)

• Conclusions o This is a brief section where you draw conclusions on the basis of and supported by the evidence presented in your review. (Approximate 150 words)

It is expected that your literature review will be well constructed with areas for discussion, debate and argument being supported by relevant references and evidence. A recognised method of referencing must be employed.

There is a maximum word count of 2000, and students are advised to read the mark scheme carefully before commencing the work. Before you start work on this assignment, it is recommended that you research and understand the purpose of undertaking a literature review.

Assessment Criteria

Research – you should demonstrate an ability to search for information from a wide range of sources, review the information and report upon relevant findings, where attention should be given to the quality of the reference source.

Technical content – you should demonstrate the ability discuss technical issues at an appropriate level and show an understanding of complex topics.

Communication – you should demonstrate an ability to communicate ideas through the completion of a well written essay report that is appropriately structured and exhibits a strong technical vocabulary, maintaining attention to detail including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Critical evaluation – you should show that you have the ability to identify the really important aspects of your chosen subject, find evidence of prior work and thinking, and write authoritative conclusions with credible justification to back them up.

Coursework Specification

The literature review is to be submitted in the form of an essay report. The work is to be word processed and submitted via Turnitin on the module Canvas site

Word count 2000 words maximum.

Guide to Performance Criteria

70% and above:

Your work must be of outstanding quality and fully meet the requirements of the coursework specification and learning outcomes stated. You must show independent thinking and apply this to your work showing originality and consideration of key issues. There must be evidence of wider reading on the subject.

60% – 70%:

Your work must be of good quality and meet the requirements of the coursework specification and learning outcomes stated. You must demonstrate some originality in your work and show this by applying new learning to the key issues of the coursework. There must be evidence of wider reading on the subject.

50% – 60%:

Your work must be comprehensive and meet all of the requirements stated by the coursework specification and learning outcomes. You must show a good understanding of the key concepts and be able to apply them to solve the problem set by the coursework. There must be enough depth to your work to provide evidence of wider reading.

40% – 50%:

Your work must be of a standard that meets the requirements stated by the coursework specification and learning outcomes. You must show a reasonable level of understanding of the key concepts and principles and you must have applied this knowledge to the coursework problem. There should be some evidence of wider reading.

Below 40%:

Your work is of poor quality and does not meet the requirements stated by the coursework specification and learning outcomes. There is a lack of understanding of key concepts and knowledge and no evidence of wider reading.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is considered as academic misconduct. The University takes cases of plagiarism very seriously and all alleged cases of academic misconduct will be investigated thoroughly by a School Investigatory Panel. Students are advised to ensure that any coursework submitted is their own work or, where the work of others is referred to (this includes any third-part material e.g. text, images, diagrams, drawings), it is correctly referenced. The University defines plagiarism in the following way:

• The representation of the work, written or otherwise, of any other person, from any source whatsoever, as the candidate’s own. Examples of plagiarism may be as follows:
• The verbatim copying of another’s work without clear identification and acknowledgement – including the downloading of materials from the internet without proper referencing and acknowledgement
• The close paraphrasing of another’s work by simply changing a few words or altering the order of presentation, without clear identification and acknowledgement.
• Unidentified and unacknowledged quotation of phrases from another’s work.
• The deliberate and detailed presentation of another’s concept as one’s own.
