ENG4C Assignment – “A Sound of Thunder”

ENG4C Assignment – “A Sound of Thunder”

Choose one of the following two options.

OPTION # 1: For the creative writer

Ending re-write: You will invent a one-page ending for the story, beginning at the line, “Somehow, the sign had changed” (7). Follow the criteria given:

SUCCESS CRITERIA: Check these off before printing your good copy.

  • Use proper short story formatting:
    • submission information in top-left corner
    • typed, with 12 point / regular font
    • double spaced
    • indented paragraphs

  • Begin your ending by re-writing the TYME SEFARI INC sign, exactly as written in the story

  • Include all the characters we have met so far: Eckels, Travis, Lesperance, Billings, Kramer, man behind the desk

  • Do NOT copy any part of the real ending; it is not recommended to even preview Bradbury’s full story

  • At least three (3) things must be different in the future

  • Include both narration and dialogue

  • Use figurative language, including at least one of each of the following:
    • simile, personification and metaphor
    • These sentences must be highlighted and labelled.

  • Minimum of one (1) page, approximately 250 words

  • Do not write more than 2 pages (500 words)

Order of submission: 1) Good copy of short story 2) Any rough work
3) This sheet, with criteria checked off

First/Last Name: ______________________________

OPTION # 2: For the visually creative communicator

Visual representation of devices:

You will invent 3 posters (8 ½ x 11) depicting literal representations of three different literary devices from the story: metaphor, simile, personification, or hyperbole. Follow the criteria given:

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

  • Each page must be a regular page size (8 ½ X 11)

  • On each page, include the type of device, the full quotation (in quotation marks), and the page number (in brackets)

Ex:    Simile: “He jumped like a cat” (2).

Quotations must be full sentences—do note quote a partial phrase

All work must be of your own thought and design.  You may use the computer to create images; however, you must significantly alter/modify the images to avoid plagiarism

Do not include pencil on good copy

Pay close attention to detail and artistic sensibility, as those will affect the message you are trying to communicate

Do not use a literary device more than once

What to hand in:

  • Good copy of 3 posters
  • Any rough work
  • This sheet, with criteria checked off and name filled out at the top
