Electoral College

Exactly How to Write Your Paper on the Electoral College

Follow these directions!

Check each of these off as you go, to make sure you have done them correctly.
NOTE:
If you quote the articles or the Constitution, please use quotations and either reference it in the
sentence:
In the Constitution, it says that “the electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by
ballot…”
or reference it in parenthesis at the end of the sentence, before the period:
The Framers felt that the citizens were “too easily duped by promises or shenanigans
(us.constitution.net).”

Read Article 1 (“Electoral College Facts”), then:
1) Write your first paragraph using the information in that article to briefly summarize. This will be
your introductory paragraph. You should tell the reader what the electoral college is, why the
framers chose to create it, and the process of choosing the President, briefly (You will add a little
more here later, once you are done with all of the articles).
Read Article 2 (“Arguments Against the Electoral College”), then:
2) Write a summary paragraph, including the main points of the article. Be sure to include the title
of the article in quotations so that we know what article you are writing about.
3) Write a paragraph explaining which of the possible reasons given in the article YOU think is the
BEST reason to abolish the electoral college, and why. (You don’t have to think it’s correct, but
you need to tell me which is their best argument).
Read Article 3 (“Arguments For Keeping the Electoral College”), then:
4) Write a summary paragraph, including the main points of the article. Be sure to include the title
of the article in quotations so that we know what article you are writing about.
5) Write a paragraph explaining which of the possible reasons given in the article YOU think is the
BEST reason to keep the electoral college, and why. (You don’t have to think it’s correct, but you
need to tell me which is their best argument).
Read Articles 4 & 5 (“Faithless Elector: A Court Ruling Just Changed How We Picked Our President,” and
also “Justices Rule States Can Bind Presidential Electors’ Votes.”), then:

6) Summarize the main points of the two articles in one paragraph. Generally tell me what this
newest issue over the electoral college is about, and what the different rulings were. How could
this change the election in 2020?
Check the posted list in Important Documents to see what state you have been assigned. Follow that
state on election night (you do not have to sit up, but you need to find information about how that state
voted). You’ll need to know: What is your state? Can your state split its electoral votes? What is the
current population of your state, and how many electoral votes does your state have? Is your state
currently considered a “swing state?” Is your state typically considered a “blue (democrat)” state or a
“red (Republican)” state with regard to presidential elections? What is your state PREDICTED to do on
election night? What did it actually do?
7) Write a paragraph explaining the above information regarding your state.
Review all information. Now that you have seen how it works, what is YOUR opinion? Why?
8) Using the information you have from the aforementioned articles, how do you feel about the
electoral college? Do you think it should remain? Do you think it should be abolished? Should
we keep it but make changes? Why? Discuss your reasons using valid information from the
articles. If your particular assigned state’s voting made a difference in your answer, OR if the
articles regarding faithless electors came into play in your reasoning, explain why.
