Overview

This week, we will focus on the planning logistics and management for instructional strategy. We will discuss how to choose a delivery system for conducting instruction, how to organize content, and how to select media for an instructional strategy.

Then, we will move forward to the step of “Developing and Selecting Instructional Materials” in the Dick and Carey model. We will take a look at what needs to be included in the instructional package, how to evaluate existing instructional materials, the steps involved in the instructional material development, and resources that you can use to develop your own instructional material.

• Assess the three components of an instructional package.
• Evaluate existing instructional materials.
• Incorporate ARCS to promote learning.
• Develop multimedia instructional materials to engage learners.

Week 5 Discussion: Using Media and Visuals to Capture Attention

This is a whole class discussion.

The ARCS Model is mentioned several times in our course text.  The first component, Attention, is an incredibly important aspect of increasing the interest level (and potentially engagement level) of the learner.  One method to grab or capture a learner’s attention is to begin a chunk of instruction with a relevant and engaging visual or media.

For this week’s post, look carefully at the content of your learning module.  Locate (existing material/resource) or develop (original material/resource) an example of a visual or media source that could be used to introduce the topic in an active, engaging, thought-provoking, or exciting manner.

Example visuals or media source include (not limited to):

• video clip
• infographic
• audio clip
• cartoon
• photograph
• meme

In your initial post (due Wednesday, midnight EST), include the following:

• Brief description of the topic you are addressing (chunk of instruction or module as a whole—whichever this example directly applies to)
• Visual or Media — link to it or upload the file
• Brief rationale as to why you felt this would grab the learner’s attention
