Lydia’s Post
Servant leadership is a follower- centered leadership theory that focused on call “to serve and then followed by the desire to lead” (Thomas, 2018). The fundamental principle of this theory is the zeal for “leaders to act in a Christ-like manner” (Whitney, 2018). Also, the principle is centered on the servant leader working “from a purely moral perspective and focusing on the follower first by empowering them to achieve that organization goals” (Gandolfi and Stone,2018).
Servant leaders have 10 qualities “(listening, empathy, healing, self-awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth of people, and building community) that make them proactive, ambitious, and goal driven with focus and motivation and guide their leadership and decision making” (Gandolfi and Stone, 2018). For the purpose of this assignment listening and awareness will be discussed.
Excellent listening skills and ability to communicate articulately and empathetically fosters inter professional communication in providing patient care. The servant nurse leader as part of the health care team not only collaborate and engage in professional interaction with other members,
but also actively listens to the patients’ concerns and needs. It is imperative for the leader to listens to other healthcare members and patients “without judgment, think before reacting, use foresight and intuition, and choose words wisely” (Whitney, 2018). This will invariable maintain
team work, builds trusts, fosters confidence and enhances patients’ care and safety.
Awareness, especially self-awareness is also essential to support inter professional communication in providing patient as it allows the servant nurse leader to determine how present actions/decisions will affect the future. With self-awareness the leader recognizes his/her “strengths, weaknesses, moral values, character, motivations, desires, and goals” (Whitney, 2018). This enables the leader to gain total control over his/her thought processes/ emotions and how they can affect other healthcare team. Such leader will be approachable, give opportunity for advice, contributions, constructive criticisms and feedbacks, and this will allow other professionals to communicate any issues or concerns about patient without fear or hesitation. This will invariably improve patients care, as there will be unrestricted inter-professional interaction and collaboration.
